Description I took a shot of the moon on xmas day (night) with a 500mm telephoto lens with a 3x telephoto converter = 1500mm lens. The moon filled the entire frame. It was almost impossible to focus because even touching the camera made the moon wobble completely out of frame, so moving the focus ring wasn't easy, lol :/

Anyway, I was surprised how much weird stuff there is on the moon what you can't see with your eyes Can you see the weird lines going towards the nipple thing? Bizarre.

really nice shot ... keep it up, we need more lunar photography here on dA so people know that it doesn't take a professional photographer and thousands of $$$'s worth of equipment to get out there and take some photos of the moon! ... of course it helps, but it's not necessary at all ... great work

Yeah, those lines, and the nipple thing, are crazy. I had never seen those in any picture of the moon.

wow ...what a moon shot...you gotta do solar eclipses when they come round next, very cool they are. the lines, look to be from astroids ploughing into it, the moon is such a phenomal weird place aint it

i worked at nasa as an intern and been to all their space camps.. going to school to do the nerdy thing what tobe an astronaut...

Nipple thing is actually the Tycho impact crater, and the line thingys are called Rays, which were cased by a HIGH velocity impact that shot the material out of the impact basin....

Nipple thing never heard that term before.. interesting... non the less it is hard to use basic camera and telescope to make moon and other astophotography.... get a nice BIG scope and a CCD camera and youmight have luck... need several million.. LOL... ill just stick to using the schools equipemtn..

anyways, non the less.. great pic...

Wow, thanks so much for the reply Now there's something I wasn't expecting, hehe. I had a vague idea the lines were caused by that.. I couldn't think of any other explanation! I still prefer my term, "nipple" NASA should use it.

ANGEL-2004 [2004-12-29 01:38:06 +0000 UTC]

...is it possible that what you're seeing is the reflection of a star between you and the moon? It reminds me of how the light point spread out, like when you take a picture of a candle...the flame part spreads out in a similar way. Just wondering...angels don't know much about this stuph

fyta In reply to ANGEL-2004 [2004-12-29 07:28:14 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, it's not possible to see detail in any reflections in the moon because the surface would diffuse the light.. and it's not lens flare like you mentioned with candles \:] I wonder if there are any Nasa employees on devArt? hehehe

Great stuff, I thought it was a an amazing coincidence that there was a full moon and snow on christmas day! I was going to photograph it myself but I don't have a long enough lense. I went for a walk through some fields that night, it was amazing because the moon lit up the snow.
