I feel kind of sad, knowing that this scene was from Kenichi's memories of Apachai moments before the latter was killed by Agaard.

Read the manga. I personally would say that he was just knocked out by Agaard and his death was misread by the injured Agaard and the Bantou master and he regained his consciousness through his own resolution to protect Kenichi, but everyone maintains that he died and returned from the dead. I wouldn't know anymore, even if it's happened before in real life.

He lives. in the manga later he's saved by the other masters and makes a full recovery.

Personally, I think he really did die. But the Grim Reaper was so flabberghasted with him that he cut that deal just so Apachai would be off his hands!
