I feel kind of sad, knowing that this scene was from Kenichi's memories of Apachai moments before the latter was killed by Agaard.

Read the manga. I personally would say that he was just knocked out by Agaard and his death was misread by the injured Agaard and the Bantou master and he regained his consciousness through his own resolution to protect Kenichi, but everyone maintains that he died and returned from the dead. I wouldn't know anymore, even if it's happened before in real life.

He lives. in the manga later he's saved by the other masters and makes a full recovery.

Yeah, I read that part. Recent chapters more than make up for what happened in that scene though. ^^

He definitely did die: Kenichi holds his fingers at his neck to check his pulse shortly before he and Tirawit go at each other in Dou combat.
