Description Touching more on the artist in me. I've been working on other drawings for a while now. However, last night, this idea came to me out of nowhere. I finished it close to 4am and touched on it here and there throughout the day.

Not what you're used to seeing from me...but still with a darker, edgier aesthetic which is typical of my renderings.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Hope you do too.

Samson's a badass. This is just too awesome g0b1in, a very interesting take.
You've also done David. You should do Ehud next, he's like the biblical equivalent of a ninja.

Thanks!

The problem I have with Biblical figures from the Old Testament is that the only reference I have for their clothing is based on European art. Samson's depiction here is quite artistic but the real reason he's covered only in hair is that I didn't know how to clothe him. Works out for this piece...but we'll see which others I'll be able to pull off.

Is it him? Or is it Maybelinne?! Sorry. I had to say that. LOL but it's awesome, I love how everything flows!

Ack, I pressed send too soon and forgot to add the following:

Check that out and let me know what you think! The tone of your pictures (particularly ones like your Nightcrawler) is what I'm trying to achieve with the pics I'm coming up with, though I'm not really that good with "spotting blacks" (as Jim Lee would say) and don't know if there's a book or something on the subject I could read up on.

Do you know of any resources I can look to for that?

Thanks

When you've completed a few pictures, I can take a look at them.

Resources?

I was introduced to the paintings of Carovaggio when I was younger and his style impacted me heavily regarding contrasts between light and dark. His use of color, as well, although that isn't applicable to pencil work.

In comics, I'm sure there are many that are great at it, but I've only followed a few. Jim Lee, of course, is great at it, but Oliver Coipel uses it masterfully. I'd recommend a look at his work.

I don't know if there are books on the subject. Like with many, I'm a look-see-do kinda artist. I go kinda deep with my shadows so you may want to play around with the depth of shadow and maybe not drench them in shade like I do. It's a fun tool that you can use to create mood and character and I use it to form expressions as well as lines.

I'm still learning.

I've only seen some of Coipel's work, namely his rendition of the Wasp. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to meet him when he was in the States at one of the New York Comic Cons. I've been following Jim Lee rather closely, though. He remarks in one of his videos that "there's a whole science behind spotting blacks", I'm not sure if there's any technical term for the kind of dramatic shading in question that I can use to look up any sort of literature about it. Looking at your work, I almost wonder if you used photo references and special lighting to figure out where to put your shading.....

One of the big issues I have with dramatic shading is a lack of understanding of light sources, specifically the effect they have on surface anatomy. I'm never exactly sure where shadows should be cast and how far, given whatever light source I'm using. Hatching is another concept that sort of eludes me; I think it looks really pretty when it's implemented, but I find myself at odds with doing it myself. I'm just not sure how to approach it. Jim Lee uses it a lot in his art, and it helps create moods with his dramatic shading but at the consequence of making his characters look older because of adding more lines in their faces. I haven't quite been able to figure out how to use shading on a face while preserving a youthful look. He also once said in an interview that artists "cheat" in the sense that so long as the picture is convincing to the human eye, it doesn't necessarily have to be perfectly accurate to real-life conditions. This is the idea behind dramatic foreshortening, shading, and other things in comic books.

I'll look up Coipel, though, and check out his stuff.

And artists never stop learning. I guess it's part of being an artist; you keep evolving and use your dissatisfaction with your work to make it better for the next round. That's one of the reasons I'm here on DA; to learn techniques and get critiques from those who know more than me, while I continue to draw from life and my environment whenever I get a chance. If I didn't get feedback from others, I wouldn't be able to get any better.

I only have a TPB of House of Marvel in which Coipel's shadow work is accompanied by bold colors. It's a style that really appeals to me and when I imagine my work colored, I imagine it like so.

You'll notice that my posted work centers on the human figure and organics (thereby exposing my weakness in mechanics). And having been drawing people since I can remember, they really are intuitive, at this point. No photo reference is really necessary unless I'm going for a specific ethnic look that's not heavily represented in media...like Aztecs, for instance.

And what Jim Lee says is right regarding shading. I've said myself to others here that, regarding shading, it doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to look like it is. It helped tremendously that I worked heavily on line work first. Shading and crosshatching are embellishments that add accent. Sort of the icing on the cake while your lines and proportions are the foundation.

There's a way to preserve youth with shading. I've learned some things that can help and I can get into them later.

I love that darker, edgier aesthetic. I think comics and comic films need more of it. Hey, if you can do it with MotU, then you can do it with any franchise.

I love how you darken images with the large areas of blacks in the shading. While it's of course a shortcut to get the image done quicker, it really sets a great dark tone for characters, adding to the suspension of disbelief.

Speaking of darker tones, some things I was working on a while ago. I've been trying to get around to drawing up this stuff.

The hair is quite long compared to all renderings I've seen in the past. But taking into account the length of time he was judging Israel, it falls within reason.

And of course, as an artist, I'm able to take artistic license.

I was checking this out last night, but I was too tired to comment on it.
The pose is quite solid and has a lot of weight to the figure. His expression is
quite intense and full of knowledge. The way that you rendered his very LONG
mane of dark colored hair is wonderful. Simple is the best way to go with a pic.
It's a mental for sure. Keep it up, man!
