I was too, until December. Lol. So, I'm by no means an expert on the matter.
A good way to start is 2 things, one practice painting the materials you want to include via spheres:
This step takes a while, but it's very necessary. Painting in spheres allows you to see how the material works in direct light, bounced light, core shadow, and regular shadow. It also shows how reflective the material is. These are all done through observation of actual references of the materials. It also shows you how to render that material.
Once you do that, sketch out some scenarios in black and white, big shapes, no textures, use lasso tool for sharp edges.
Add values, make sure distant stuff has different values. Then you can overlay with photos to get a better sense of color, though it isn't required, nor necessary if you have a good sense of color. After that, play with layer styles, gradient layers, and color balance until you get something you like. In the end just paint.
I recommend you work one light source at the time, as it will be most beneficial to you, and very much less stressful.
One quick tip: Reflective light, or reflections will never be brighter than the light source, unless what is reflecting is some kind of very reflective metal (chrome).
Other than that, I recommend studying landscapes by painters such as Albert Bierstadt. Studying their painting will make you notice that stuff that looks like blue sky, or orange is actually something like a grey green, but next to blue looks orange.
One last thing, for a more natural scenery, use less saturated colors, save them for areas of interest. An easy way to make a color more saturated than it is is by placing the color next to it's complimentary color.
Hope that is helpful, and let me know if you have any other questions! I'd be more than happy to help you out.

Thank you very much. I used to hate environments all together, until I did this one and the one before. I kinda like them now. On to character design, though! I'll be posting those probably around Monday or Sunday!

Thank you! I appreciate that you took time to look at the other version as well, sunsetzero! You rock! I worked hard to make the atmosphere as realistic as I could, and looked at a lot of pictures of mountains to understand the visual affinity created by the atmospheric perspective (the more far the more blue and desaturated an object gets).

Wahhh Gabriel this is so wonderfully done!
I love the value, composition, texture and just everything here! Especially how you rendered the tree and the rocks! Awesome job!!

非常感谢,Xin! I worked hard on the values, trying to make them right. It was very very fun! I wish I could've rendered the tree better, but something about it looking simple on the top part is appealing to me. What do you think? If you had a critique, I would truly appreciate it!
