Judging 2/3 (busy so I will post)
Really cute little foal and the anatomy and colours go beautifully together. The way you did the lighting and background compliments the foal's colours perfectly.
The only thing I'd say is that the horse doesn't seem to blend into the background as much as it could.

Judging 1/3

The anatomy on this picture is pretty much perfect! Also the shading is placed well and the overall appearance is playful yet competitive. Its great that you used the suggested tack and the pose is interesting and difficult to draw so shows you put a lot of effort in. The background is lovely and well detailed. As I said before it looks like you have put a lot of effort into this.
For extra image: The overall view of the handler is anatomically correct and in-action. Again a harder pose has been used which shows effort has been put in. Also I love your simple but effective background as it looks detailed and brings the picture together. The overall appearance is relaxed and not competitive but still Luke a preparation.

The shading could have been more detailed and if a rider and story had been added it would have allowed you more points. Maybe a wider view of the arena or parts of a crowd could have given a more competitive effect
For extra image: I know it's a sketch but it could have been more detailed or slightly bigger so it was clearer. The tack and handler' hands are very hard to see. The leg and back anatomy is a little strange in the foal and it doesn't look like there is any shading.

Points given: 59/94 (not 100 due to lack of story, handler and shading and story on the extra image)

As *having a handler* were optional, I opted to don't add it to the picture. That's a liberty picture , so the horse must (for me) be in the spotlight , all the freedom inside, and a handler wouldn't go well in here...

About the shadows, I think it's a bit unfair because it's about style, the style should be judged and no how the artist must do it... If I wanted a really realistic drawing I would put much more details and all my skills to make it just like in real life, but of course as everybody I'm not perfect. So If i have done that as realistic as possible It wouldn't look really good as, for example, markstewart , he is an amazing artist and I would really love to become just like him, I'm not the owner of all art skills so all I'm reading now Would fit well in that occasion .

About the sketch, each of us has a style of sketch, my sketches should pass the impression and help me to find lines. It's constructive what you have said, but I might don't carry that to my life, because as I said too "it's about style", and I will keep that in mind.
I'm not a professional artist anyway I work with art in my real life, I do oil paintings and the digital art (I'm a graphic designer), they are already around the world, scientific and artistic.

And finalizing: yeah I felt the same when did the foal, he wasn't really fusing to the background.

Don't be afraid! I'm not being rude and I don't wanna to, but I'm just letting you know my opinion  .Anyway thank you for the judging.

I appreciate that it was optional, it only counted for 2/100 points so if you chose to do it you would get some sort of reward from it.
And yeah I understand what your saying but well if I worded it in a differant way maybe you could have made the shading stand out a bit more? Just for example darkening the shadows would have improved it a bit. I dunno it's your style you can chose however you want to use it
Your welcome I guess...

he's such a handsome boy :3 i adore his design!
and although the background is kept simple, there's something on it that fascinates me! i guess it's the colors and the ground :3

Awww thank youuu The award for the design goes totally for CSStables She did an wonderful work!

yeah! it's really simple, it worries me, but I adore this, the ground has only the hoof-prints details and some shadows and highlights, I also use some "overlay" layers to give a nice color effect

still your implementation is really nice!
nothing to be worried about D: i like simple backgrounds.. sometimes bg's are so very distracting and here you can really concentrate on the horsie :3 the pose, the lines, the feel, …

GabiHorseArt98 In reply to dat-inu [2014-02-17 00:43:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank youuu I'm happy to hear that, anyway, I think I could add more from my imagination, but as I had no idea of the indoor arena, I decided to make the horse the spotlight I'm really happy about your comment thank you

But my way to design BG is to draw first the horse (after sketch all) and the last part is the background, I can try all until find the perfect BG that fits: harmony

All I search for

i think it fit's the image :3 so the background looks totally fine to me!
^^ i do the sketching and then the lineart. when it's done it depends on my motivation where i go on. sometimes i do the flats, sometimes i start with the background
like for my latest deviations i started with the background :3

Oh, sometimes is good to start the BG first, because you can put more effort and details . But I love you art! And I'm loving to talk with you and make more and more friends, since I joined TWD I have never felt that I was in a group for the first time, and it's really healthy to draw and be inside the HArpg achievements

Anyway, Thank you!!
