Description
The streltsy were the main infantry corps of the Tsardom of Russia. When Russia was not at war, they served as police in the capital and in cities bordering with other countries. It is safe to say that the streltsy had become a caste WITHIN ANOTHER caste ... They were recruited from the peasants of the rural population of a feudal system that provided the Tsar with an army. The service became hereditary and, among the stretlsy, some were richer than others, which led to the creation of factions within the regiments, of which, by 1674, there were 14 of them.
They were paid in cash and grain, but at some point in the second half of the seventeenth century, the Tsardom began to pay them on land. This, combined with the support of Tsar Peter I's half-brother, Ivan V, led to their revelation and subsequent dissolution in 1689. Many were executed and others were simply exiled. Altough some would be restored and go on to serve in the Great Northern War (1700 - 1721).
