Description For

After Smithers Sr.'s death, spring never came back to Burns' life.

The reason about the withered daffodil Monty is holding and Waylon Sr.'s favorite ones been so important in their relationship is simple: Symbolically the daffodils are about one-sided love or unrequited love, which could works in both sides early because Waylon is going to marry Roberta and Monty so bitter about it. But what I'm looking is what those represents: the coming of spring. Daffodils (or jonquils) are one of the first flowers to bloom, calling the end of winter and the cold, the incoming of warm and light. Even the coming of warm love.
For Monty, Waylon Sr.'s love is the spring for his harsh and cold heart, the reason of living beyond money and power. Burns was fullfilled of love and happiness. He was "Happy" once again.
With his tragic demise, just at the doors of a new spring (March 15th when he died according to the story Nuclear Attraction), spring died so early. To the very door of a change of weather, the return of warmness. Winter gain more territory into Monty's heart, even almost permanently.
Monty felt his very soul freezing into a cruel and merciless winter, a freezing sensation that kill his beloved flower and not been compasionate with his agonic tears. For him, spring never comes back...
