Description If you're new to digital painting and you'd like to learn, join my classΒ here !

(I'm sure there are other ways of doing this, but this is just how I set up my drawings to color in Photoshop)

---

So I didn't figure out how to do this until I was about a year or so into digital painting. So I wanted to make this for anyone who may not know.

Sometimes I make a traditional, pencil sketch and I want to color it on the computer. So what I do is I scan in my drawing and I open it up in Photoshop CS3 and I duplicate the layer. Then I delete my starting layer and I set the new layer to "Multiply." Then I add a new layer and put it under my lineart.
Then my drawings are ready for coloring.

For my drawings I use Photoshop CS3, Easy Paint Tool SAI, and my Wacom Intuos 3, but this would probably work in other programs too.

Hmm, can you tell me why you duplicated the sketch and deleted the original one? Also, can this method be used in digital drawings (y'now, not the scanned ones)? Thanks

GabrielleBrickey In reply to PatsyBelle [2013-07-15 04:48:36 +0000 UTC]

Well I think there are a couple ways you could do it, but this is just a way that worked for me

And it will work for digital drawings, yes

Nahh, not free. Pretty expensive. I can't get my links to work right now, but if you google-buy adobe photoshop, you should be able to find prices. You can get a really nice discount if you are a student too.

hmm, i did at some point but I dont really use sai anymore bc my computer that it is on is bad. So i cant walk you through it. you could probably find something online though.

AabedK2F [2011-12-30 15:56:03 +0000 UTC]

well you could just draw it in photoshop! it'll be easier to handle and work through it,
and about duplicating the layer to get it unlocked then deleting the original as in step 2,3 &4 , you can just double click the layer in the first place and a popup for renaming it appears, just press enter & holla the layer is unlocked

I always have a problem with coloring digitally without the drawing looking a bit "fake-ish". So, hopefully this will help.
