Well, like the rationales behind the appeals of most human traits, it varies from person to person. For some, its psychological. The large, round female form elicits a sense of calm and appears nurturing and safe. Almost kind of a 'mommy' thing. But for most, its more physical. And in that regard, it isn't too far removed from how most guys are attracted to women, only the rules are a little different and the path has a few detours.Β
Say, for instance, the hottest girl in school is also the most unapproachable, due to popularity or whatever. Now say she's about 100 pounds heavier. She's still hot, she's just big. The difference is, she's much more approachable now, because society's conditioning on acceptable everyday social norms have crafted an inverse relationship between weight and appeal. For those in a community such as ours, this new approach-ability due to, or perhaps because of, her weight would make the girl just seem that much more attractive.
However, it can also be a factor of simple physical attraction. If a chick of normal weight is at the club and she's got a huge rack, chances are, you're going to notice. Especially if she's wearing something that accentuates that particular asset. Well, imagine she's got a twin sister whose big, and her boobs are just that much bigger. Same principle applies. You're going to notice as it'd be sure to be hard to miss. At that point, its a matter of logistics: Her tits are that big because she's so fat. And if you're a boob guy, you're gonna find that appealing. Same goes for ass-men, such as myself. Point is, bigger body means bigger traits.
Then it becomes about how you like to see it distributed, as you know: no two bodies are alike.
Now, the 'fetishy' bit comes in when people go overboard with it in their imaginations, case in point, the pic above. But that's a whole nother can of worms you'd have to actually explore the various aspects of the community to understand, as you only asked for an explanation of the attraction. Not the whole shebang.
But I hope that helped you understand a little better. I'm not certain I did the best job explaining, so there might be one or two holes in my logic. Moral is, its not as simple as 'we're all weirdos'. Though that is true for some.Β

I guess. Β It just seemed like for a while that everyone was making these pics of morbidly obese women for some strange reason. Β Some big girls are good looking, others aren't. Β I personally don't have a thing for any specific shape or body type, but I was curious why the big trend last year and the year before last.
It was like the My Little Pony thing. Β It seemed like you couldn't surf Deviant Art without a MLP pic on every other page. Β It was just very strange.
I wonder what the next "big" fad is going to be (no pun intended).

And it's been going on since long before DeviantArt was founded. The community has existed for decades. There's just never been a forum for it as extensive and flexible before.
But as I said, it all really comes down to preference.
Whether through art or literature, those of us here simply prefer to present in a more positive light. The harsh judgments of the common public are just far too strict and unforgiving when it comes to things like physical beauty.
But if you're curious enough, you might consider exploring the community a little on your own. You might surprise yourself -w-

Not really curious to explore fetishes, just curious why some things become trends. Β I've known some very nice overweight girls who were very attractive, but I don't have a thing for overweight women. Β Likewise I've seen some my little pony stuff that looks neat and interesting, but I'm not a fan of the cartoon. Β
There was also a foot thing for a while, costume plays (play dress up) seems to be all the rage now, and one or two other things .... oh yeah, tying up women and gagging them seemed to be the in thing for some weird reason.
