Description

Norma Galahawk (Lepusaquila northmanni)

Norma Galahawks are the gentle giants of Yeune. This ancient species is very hardy, and has dominated even the coldest reaches of the planet. They prefer to make their homes in high mountains, tundras and glacial environments. Despite this, they are able to survive even in temperate regions, provided that the temperature does not get too high. Normas make their homes in large burrows they will dig into mountainsides and hills. Their paw pads are covered in rigid, almost scaly skin to not only grant them impeccable traction on icy surfaces, but also to aid in digging. The thick, sleek feathers all over their body, which are similar to that of a penguin, insulate them with minimal hindrance to their aerodynamic capabilities, and allow them to achieve flight as high as the lower stratosphere with no issue. They are known in some circles as “tundra angels”, they are so named due to their compassionate nature leading them to seek out and rescue those who get lost in the ferocious blizzards of their homeland. Although their feathers are typically white, certain individuals will have very light gray stripes or other markings.
Perhaps one of the most notable traits of this species is their unique ability to “breathe ice”. This is, in actuality, due to the fact that they have a special organ located behind their lungs which contains a liquid that, when it comes in contact with even trace amounts of carbon, will rapidly cool and crystallize. The chemical compound of this liquid has yet to be identified, as no samples have ever safely been obtained, but it is thought that it it is a mix of several chemicals extracted from the foods they eat during digestion. They make use of this ability when threatened, as any foe who challenges a Norma may find themselves frozen where they stand. A Norma’s diet consists mostly of fish and other ocean-dwelling creatures, their favorite being the fatty marine mammals that inhabit the cold, northern oceans. To hunt, they soar high above the waves, and when they spy their prey wandering too close to the surface, they will dive at it, latch onto it with their sharp talons, and effortlessly lift it to land to feast on. They will also, if the situation calls for it, hunt on land by using their snow-white feathers to camouflage themselves inside snowdrifts, pouncing out and overwhelming their prey with their sheer size when the opportunity presents itself. They are the largest species of Galahawk, typically being the size of a draft horse or larger.
