In an alternate universe, Series 1 of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends would debut a character in 1984 that didn't exist in Awdry's text... at least in gender, name and color! Back in the 1980s/90s, there were of course the typical criticisms about a lack of female engines within Awdry's world, and there was a plan to counter this.

For years rumors abounded that Edward was to become ALICE in the American English dub of Shining Time Station, with this often being chalked up to nothing more than internet urban legends. Recently, a Shining Time Station second draft script confirms that Edward was to become Alice after all, but this was ditched in the end. Further rumors in the 90s around Series 4 indicated that Edward would be painted pink and called Alice all around the globe in various newspapers, a fact of which made Wilbert himself NOT very happy, and Britt also shot it down indicating that she had no plans to do that with one of his characters.

This design combines BOTH into a "what-if", being a universe where a pink engine named Alice filled in Edward's roles within the TVS. To further differentiate, I decided to apply eyeliner to set the two apart. Oddly, this minor face change sees a DIFFERENT character entirely. Just a fun "what-if" for if this had been done after all. ~ Goose
