HWS Late Medieval Turko-Mongol Persianate (Timurid) Woman Warrior Concept - Historically Wrong Sketch Series

==rawing Commentaries===

In historical context, the Timurids Military Tradition were closer to that of their Mongol origin than the Islamic ones. As such, their attitudes towards women taking part in arms are more lenient, something which raised the eyebrows of muslim chroniclers. It was said that during the invasion of the Golden horde, Timur ordered his women camp followers to put on any spare helmets, helmets and gears, to defend the camp; as mentioned by Ahmad ibn Arabshah, even the Timurid women fought in close combat. Having said that though, female members of the elite Syrian-Arab aristrocrat wore armor and defended themselves during siege, as far back as the crusading time. So technically, this drawing may not be historically wrong at all

In this drawing, Urma Khatun is depicted in somewhat mix and match depiction of an elite Timurid warrior. The anthromorphic mask is based on contemporary depiction and thhe style of mail armor is from the 15th Century Islamic Zirah armor currently in the collection of Topkapi Museum. The rest of the fashion, including her retainers behind, are based on the depictions of Mongols in Jami' al-tawarikh as well as the miniatures of Baysonghor Shahnameh.

===Historical Commentaries===

Persia had seen the rise and fall of many empires in its history, but it could be said that one of the most volatile and turbulent era in the History of Persia occurred during the Middle Ages. With the fall of the native Sassanid Empire and subsequent rule under the Islamic Caliphate, Persia saw its society transformed into one of the most advance in the known world, producing many scholars and philosophers unparalleled in the middle ages. The disintegration of the Caliphate allowed some short-lived native Muslim Persian dynasties to rule the land, only to be conquered by the newly converted Turks of central Asia. The militaristic tradition of the Turks, combined with Persian administrative skills, created a blend of rich Turko-Persian culture that led to the establishment of huge empires such as that of Seljuks, Ghazvanids and the Muslim sultanates of Delhi

However, the arrival of Mongols decimated an estimated more than half of Persia's population and destroyed most of the Turko-Persian dynasties that ruled Eran centuries earlier. Nevertheless, the Mongols adopted many aspect of the previous persianate administration, combining them with the martial strength of the mongols to create an impressive militaristic empire, like the Il-khanate. The climax of such achievement however, went to Timur, otherwise known as Tamerlane "Timur the Lame", and ambitious ruler from transoxiana who united Persia under the banner of Timurid empire. He emerged as the most powerful ruler in the Islamic world, ruling much of Persia, defeating the Egyptian Mamluk, the Ottomans, Crusaders, as well as the Indian sultanate of Delhi. While his achievement were parable to that of the world's great conquerors, he was also ruthless in subjugating his enemies, being responsible for the death of an estimated 17,000,000 - 20,000,0000 lives during his reign.
