Description A Drawing of "Summer Princess" for joolita as a tribute for being one of those who has supported me in the artistic journey from the early days I have been on DA. Though, it's a comparatively small drawing before her many wonderful works, I hope this humble gift would be enough convey my thanks to her.

Inspired by the music: Theme of Jingchu

Initially, i was a bit confused when trying to draw her something. Her gallery is pretty diverse, with many works relating to both historical and fantasy fashion. There's also the comic which she is making at the moment (which I will get into later), but I prefer to draw something more with "traditional element" than a simple fan-art. Then, something struck me when I looked at her profile picture. In the drawing, there's a quote in mandarin which I think is translated as "Drag My Tail in the Mud". At first, it didn't make any sense but after further research, the phrase actually pointed out to the story of Chuang Tzu , one of the prominent teacher of Taoism. His was full of funny eccentricism, but the wisdom behind the story of "Drag My Tail in the Mud" is that, when offered a position in the kingdom's court, he would rather lead a simple life than to be honored but getting entangled with the politics and intrigues of the palace. I suppose, that's something I have been wanting to do: sit down, relax, be a human being for a moment and forget all the hecticness that has taken the major part of my life

So, since my mindset is now on Chinese history,  I decided to draw her a traditional portrayal of a young Chinese princess, adorned with a highly decorated (empress) crown with flower motives, dragons and clouds which symbolizes her rule over the 4 corners of the universe, based on the crown used during both the Tang and the Song dynasties. also, I wanted to incorporate her style, a simplistic ink work with complex design and neat composition, which results in not only a drawing that captivates it's viewer's eyes, but also bold enough to speak for itself. Although, her eyes may not look chinese, or even Asian at all, I suppose the decoration would be enough to compensate my limitation.

The title Summer Princess is derrived from the month of her Birthday, which is August, that corresponds to Summer in China. Also, the Mandarin Writings on the top left are two beautiful Chinese proverbs. I will leave you, the audience, to find out the meaning

And yes, she is making her wonderful comic called "Of Conquest and Consequences ", which can be read either from the link, or here at smackjeeves . Go on, click it!

I honestly don't know how to thank you! It's such a thoughtful gift! You even took the trouble of searching for the quotation on my id pic... (i am glad you also liked the story of Chuang Tzu and the Ch'u officials. His 'lack of worldly ambition' always resonated with me.)
I absolutely adore the headdress you drew - it must have taken ages to complete! I've seen crowns like this one in museums and instantly classified them as 'exquisite but un-drawable' in my head. Your levels of patience put me to shame!
The full-ink style becomes you. I love the way you adjusted your style to fit the form - her eyes are particularly fetching; so pensive and full of spirit.
I have a feeling my comment is somewhat chaotic, but it's because i'm so surprised and taken with your gift. You truly are both 友好 and 慷慨. Thank you so much!

You are more than welcome Joolita, I'm glad you like the piece! You have my gratitude as well, since if it wasn't for this drawing, I wouldn't have bought the book about Chuang Tzu in the first place! His wisdom have somehow influenced me to slow down and unwind a bit

The dragon and the flowers were the most exciting part to draw, though, it's nothing compared to the real ones

Okay, WHY did you make the Chinese characters simplified? If this is to be period-accurate, they MUST be traditional.

Hahahaha! Please, don't blame my lack of mandarin for the mistake of using pinyin

No, what I meant is the characters in the actual picture.
