Sure enough, one night in her teens, she woke up to find her neck had vanished. She was actually a nukekubi - a yokai from Japanese folklore that had their head detached from their body. Her grandparents had prepared her by creating an enchanted choker that makes her appear to still have a neck when worn. With practice, she can will her head to move around through the air, though she typically keeps it in the "normal" position.
