Description So here is my list of the Top 10 Villains I feel sorry for. If you will see that there are 3 villains on my list from my 10 Top Ten Villains list. Some of the choices will be the same and some may not. If you want to know why they’re on there I will get to them soon but for now I will get to the list starting from 10 (Top) to 1 (Bottom). Here's my Previous Top 10 list if you want to see it gamergirl14.deviantart.com/art…

#10 Erik from the Phantom of the Opera
This was my first choice on my list and the first villain I felt sorry for. When I saw both the movie and the Broadway show (during my trip to New York), I found out his backstory, his mother abandoned him due to his disfigured face and no one loved him. All he wanted was someone to love him, that’s why he was obsessed with Christine, but in the end he learned that you can’t force someone to love you, give them time to know and they will love you back. Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite Broadway Shows and there’s another character from a Broadway show I will get to later.

#9 Shadow the Hedgehog from Sonic
For those of you who don’t know him I’ll give a little background about him. He was created by one of the scientists of Space Colony Ark named Prof. Gerald Robotnik (Dr. Robotnik/ Dr. Eggman’s Grandfather) who befriended the professor’s granddaughter Maria, they both dreamed of going down to the Planet Earth and explore what’s down there. But one day the Government decided to shut down a project, Maria died from a gunshot after she sent Shadow down to Earth. After he learned about Maria’s death, he started hating humans and vowed revenge. However he learned that revenge will not bring her back and he started being the Anti-Hero we know today. Whenever I play a Sonic game and see him, I see him less as a Villain and more of and Anti-Hero. Shadow; though your name is neutral I feel your pain.

#8 Mr. Freeze from Batman
This is one of the most popular Batman villains that I like (besides the Joker and I am NOT referring to the crappy Batman and Robin version). Some of the Batman villains have tragic backstories that made them the baddies we love to hate now; Mr. Freeze has one that made me feel sorry for him. His real name is Victor Fries (it’s pronounced Frees), a scientist with a beautiful wife named Nora that he is keeping frozen in a cryogenic stasis that is keeping her from dying so he can find a cure for her. Unfortunately an accident caused him to be the cold hearted Mr. Freeze that he is today that can only survive in sub-zero temperature. Sure he could be cold and heartless on the outside but he’s still the kind and caring Victor Frees on the inside that loves his wife. There are many Batman villains that we feel sorry for from their tragic backstory for me to choose, but in the end I chose Mr. Freeze.

#7 Elphaba Thropp from Wicked
When I was little while watching the Wizard of Oz, I was terrified of the Wicked Witch/Elphaba due to her laugh and frightening appearance, however my view of her changed when I saw Wicked. She wasn’t evil she was just misunderstood due to her powers; everyone was scared of her due to her skin. She and Galinda/Glinda the Good Witch were good friends even though they were torn apart by their roles, the end she’s still alive but gone somewhere with Fieyro/Scarecrow. I learned never to judge a person so quickly, you have to look at their backstory and find out why they’re like this. BTW the pic of Elphaba is the original actress that played her Idina Menzel.

#6 The Once-Ler from the Lorax
This guy I can’t help but feel sorry for him. At the beginning he started out as a person that wanted to invent something cool and different, he got his answer from the Truffla Forest, but when the Lorax explained to him about the forest he made a promise with the Lorax never to cut down a tree. But his mother made him break the promise by cutting down all the trees and it was too late for him to realize that. I felt sorry for him because his mother Isabella-Ler is a *censored* no wonder why people that saw the movie hate her. So basically all the stuff that happened in the Lorax, don’t blame the Once-Ler …BLAME HIS MOTHER ISABELLA! SHE’A *CENSORED* SHE-BEAST THAT FAVORS THE ONCE-LER’S BROTHERS OVER HIM! THAT’S JUST UNACCEPTABLE! MOTHERS ARE SUPPOSE TO LOVE THEIR CHILDREN EQUALLY, NOT FAVOR ONE OVER THE OTHER(S)! I JUST WANT TO STRANGLE HER FOR MAKING THE ONCE-LER BREAK HIS PROMISE TO THE LORAX!

Sorry for my outburst there, I had to let it out of my system to express my hate on the Once-Ler’s mother Isabella. But I’m happy in the end he was reunited with the Lorax and happy to see the trees grow again.

#5 Ralph from Wreck it Ralph
Oh come one I had to put him on the list. If you’ve seen the movie you’ll know why I put him on the list. Well he isn’t a “bad” guy like the Nicelanders label him due to his role, he seems like a nice person that just wants to have respect, but didn’t get it until the end. Throughout the movie you start to feel sorry for him, and care about him, but I’m glad he got respect in the end. Besides without a villain there will be no story for us to have in movies, video games books etc… Again Ralph’s a Bad Guy but he’s not a “bad” guy.

#4 Loki from Thor and Avengers
I already talked about him in my Top 10 Villains list, but he’s a villain we feel a little sympathy for him. When he was a baby he was left to die, but Odin adopts him. However he didn’t get the love he wanted since everyone pays attention to Thor. Even though he’s my favorite Marvel Villain, I felt a little sorry for him, but when I saw the second trailer of Thor: The Dark World, he seems like an Anti-Hero than a villain. I don’t know if he is the villain in the second movie but we will see when it comes out.

#3 Pitch Black from Rise of the Guardians
I already talked about Pitch in my Top 10 Villains list. When I saw his back-story from Guardians of Childhood, he used to be Kozmotis Pitchiner that had a daughter named Seraphina; he was hero until he was tricked into being who he is now. My OCself Raven Black/Abigail Pitchiner is Pitch’s sister; I have two pictures of what I look like in my gallery that explains about me. Again like Elphaba my view of him changed after looking at his back-story. I need to read the Books if I can find them in bookstores. (Here's one of Raven/Me gamergirl14.deviantart.com/art… and one of Abigail/Raven/Me gamergirl14.deviantart.com/art… )

#2 John Harrison/Khan Nooein Singh from Star Trek into Darkness
I already talked about this villain in my previous Top 10 list of Villains (who was number one) but here he’s number 2, let me explain again why I feel sorry for him cause he cared for his crew like Kirk does. He placed all 72 of his frozen crew mates and tried to smuggle them to safety, but he got caught and was forced to escape alone. When I saw the movie and noticed Khan tearing up when he was explaining to Kirk and Spock of why he was a terrorist, when I saw a tear coming out of his eye, it made me question myself "Should I hate him for killing innocent men and women? Or Should I care about him?" I'm conflicted with those Questions now. But I heard that IDW (the comic company) will do a 5-part miniseries that will explains his Origins/back-story of the Eugenic Wars and how he took over the world. In the end he’s put back in Cyro Sleep with his fellow augments stored away with them. Maybe in another Star Trek Movie we’ll see him again, maybe but we’ll see.

Before #1 I will put an Honorable Mention on this list
*Harley Quinn from Batman (if you guys watch Batman you’ll know why I put her as an Honorable Mention)
And the #1 villain I feel sorry for is

#1 Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean
Even though he’s an underrated Disney Villain, but I felt like he’s the most sympathic villain I’ve seen out of all my choices of the villains I feel sorry for. In “Dead Man’s Chest” (the second POTC movie) he starts out as a cruel, ruthless, heartless*no pun intended* Ruler of the Ocean Depths that collect souls that have died in the sea. But he wasn’t always that way; he was in love with a goddess named Calypso/Tia Dalma whom he promised that they’ll be together in 10 years by collecting souls of fallen pirates, however he loves the sea and see the Brethren Court tricking Calypso into the form of Tia Dalma, he was so consumed with guilt, he carved his own heart out and placed in a chest called “The Dead Man’s Chest” and became the cruel sea Pirate he is today. His theme in the POTC soundtrack is so sad it made me feel sorry for him even more (here's his theme www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fur86y… ). In the end his heart was stabbed, fell into the ocean where Calypso is waiting for him. Davy Jones: the Cruel Heartless Pirate that is the Number 1 Villain I feel sorry for.

Mostly in a bad way. But hey, he is no longer overrated. He is controversial now.

Good choice in sympathetic villains...though personally I think that the original Once-ler from the Lorax animated special was a bit more sympathetic than his CGI counterpart.
Villains are made not born, and I wish more people would recognize this as you have.  If you want a few really good sympathetic villains - especially ones whose motives are practically kept hidden until the very end - I recommend the following:

Avatar: The Last Airbender - Princess Azula (western animation) ... though YMMV
Speed Grapher - Chouji Suitengu (anime)

and my big no. 1 for a tragic villain:

Wakfu - Nox (French animated series)

Great choices there

Though for Shadow, I'm kinda mixed on him. I thought his backstory was so amazing and cool in Sonic Adventure 2 and they portrayed him quite well in it including his sacrifice which made me teary-eyed (also his friend Maria also reminded me of Gwen Stacy). However when SEGA bought him back, I was kinda worried on it and I really hated his retcon solo spinoff game 'Shadow the Hedgehog'' in my opinion. I also find it useless that they gave him guns and a motorcycle etc. and I felt they made his character boring after Sonic Adventure 2 and it didn't do him justice...but that's not the worst, the crazy rabid fanbase almost made me hate Shadow.

However his portrayal in Sonic Boom is so much better because in that show, he feels more likeable and has a personalilty and character (in my opinion)
