Description
A beautiful iridescent male Harlequin butterfly (Taxila haquinus haquinus) sits on a leaf. One of Singapore's close to 300 species of butterflies, this particular species is endangered as its primary forest habitat and host plant which its caterpillars feed on is being threatened by urban redevelopment. Fortunately, concerted efforts by a small group of dedicated individuals are working to ensure the fragile species' survival in Singapore, by transplanting the butterfly eggs and caterpillars to new locations in the nature reserves.
