That's actually a good mindset, getting to know the chick.
I was in several relationships before deciding I didn't have enough female friends, so I just went to a con to make friends, nothing more.
Met this girl, gave advice, hung around, had some fun.
A month of talking later, and she comes on to me.
We've been dating for 2+ years since.
It's never a bad idea to be friends first, and then see if something works out. I think relationships bloom the best this way.
If it doesn't happen or work out, and it was ended on good terms, at least you'd make a good friend in the process

I guess the simplest way to put it: If you cannot be happy with yourself, you cannot be happy with another person. Some people are simply not ready to take on the responsibility of being in a relationship, and that is ok. IT is certainly better than banging some chick, getting her pregnant, and staying with her for your life regardless of your actual feelings, or risk being ostracized by society and peers because you forgot to wear a condom one day.
Don't be down. If you stay thinking like that, you ain't going anywhere. You are better than that.
I was a loser like you once. Once I finally found something to apply myself to (a medical career for instance), I went with it, stayed with it, endured a lot of crap along the way, but in the end, after wasting my life for several years, I'm finally finding a point where I can settle in, relax, be self-sufficient, and finally be happy with myself.
It is not impossible. Some people take longer than others. You can do it.
