Description Shortly after Maxwell had taken his seat on the dark throne, he set about creating his world. He yanked the land from the sea floor, willed plants into reality, and shaped the earth into various beast. After a few weeks of creating, Maxwell observed the world he had created and smiled as he watched the beefalo roam and the spiders skitter. But his achievement felt hollow without someone to share his creation with.

His mind wandered back to his days before the black throne as he remembered a mare he had fancied. The young happy blond mare named Charlie with a pare green coat with a deep love of life and all living things. Maxwell had loved her and tried to woo her in his youth, but the mare had been married to her work as a rancher and had no time for an aspiring young unicorn. Surely she would love this world he had made.

Reaching out with his magic he called to the mare and lured her to the lands he had so recently forged. The trip was a shock for Charlie and she was surprised to see Maxwell, who she only remembered as a young unicorn, now a towering colt the size of Celestia. Maxwell explained that he had made a new land and wished to show it to her. Charlie was understandably skeptical at first.

However, soon Charlie was happily trotting through grassy fields full of jackalopes and talking excitedly to the nomadic beefalo tribesmen. Maxwell smiled as Charlie enjoyed the world he had made and gave her everything she wanted as the roamed the land. At night, Maxwell would wow Charlie with a sky he had crafted and took her breath away as he would make stars dance and colors fill the sky. As Charlie fell asleep against Maxwell, he realized he was finally happy.

Yet the forces that controlled the dark throne were not so happy that their lord of darkness was not only spending time with Charlie, but working to make her happy instead of afraid. They demanded that Maxwell do as he had been instructed and have the world he had made attack Charlie and drive her mad. Maxwell refused.

Enraged at his defiance, the shadows behind the throne took matters into their own claws and dragged Charlie away into the darkness. Maxwell rushed after her, hoping to save her, but it was already to late. Charlie had been transformed from a lovely young mare into a horrible monster. Her mane and tail now no more than strands of bubbling shapeless shadows, her remaining hooves adorn with sharp claws, her mouth full of fangs and pointed teeth, her once green coat now stained the color of a moonless night. But what horrified Maxwell the most was what the shadows behind the throne had not changed. As he gazed into her luminous eyes, Maxwell could see Charlies mind had been almost completely untouched.

Charlie leapt at Maxwell wrapping her hooves around his neck sobbing, no words came from her throat, only bestial snarls and hisses as Maxwell tried to comfort the thing that had once been a mare. He tried to take her to the golden fields she loved, but the light caused her intense pain and she quickly retreated back into the dark. Maxwell tried to use his vast magical power to change Charlie back into the mare she had been, but his magic would not touch her. He even tried to call Charlie's brother to comfort her, but when night fell, Charlie found herself compelled to attack her sibling and devoured him as she sobbed.

Maxwell begged the shadows behind the throne to change Charlie back promising that he would do anything they asked him to do as long as Charlie was returned to normal and allowed to leave. The shadows refused saying that Charlie had become a useful tool for them and would remain as such as long as the dark throne stood.

Defeated Maxwell returned to his place on the throne calling more ponies to his island to become prey for his monsters, the shadows, and Charlie. Everytime a new pony arrived, Maxwell silently plead that they might find there way to him and destroy both him and the throne so that Charlie might be free. So far no pony has succeed.

Maxwell still sees Charlie sometimes, hiding away in the darkness that surrounds his throne during the day. He would go to her, but Charlie avoids him blaming him for her transformation, and he can't fault her for that. Yet sometime she calls for him, using him simply as a shoulder to cry on when the living hell that is her life become to much for her. He knows she hates him and that no matter how often he comforts her this will never change, but he will always come when she calls.

He loves her, and he would do anything for her.

So this is one of those drawings with a story behind it, one of those things one has to draw as soon as one thinks of it. It started when I discovered while reading the Don't Starve Forums that Charlie (aka The Grue) is a girl. Now this alone was a surprise to me making me begin to shape Charlie into a more feminine form. Then later in the same forum someone gave their head cannon on Charlies origin and this image popped into my head and had to be drawn.

Considering this was a drawing that had no planning, I'm surprised how well it came out, especially considering how bad I tend to be with back grounds. There are few things I would like to change, but most of it involving charcoal getting places I didn't want it.
