BC304E ‘Daedalus Evolution’

After the success of the DD-100 and BB320 classes, it was decided by Stargate Command it was beyond time for a major refit of the legacy BC304 class, starting with the Daedalus.

The upgrades, being called rightly an evolution of the class, begin in the spring of 2020 with Daedalus entering the Michigan docks first, followed by the Apollo four months later. Essentially the ships will be rebuilt from the ground up, with a new inner frame, a 100-metre stretch, to give an overall length of 750m. The depth of the main hull has increased by just 3 metres. The bulky look is due to the expanded lower bow section increasing from 138m to 170m, to accommodate more sensors and larger beam weapon generators.

Perhaps the most notable change is in the hangar decks and engine suite. The hangars are slightly larger, but are now through deck hangars, allowing the ship, with the added benefit of a connecting inner hangar, to carry up to 32 302s, or 48 if the G model is carried. The power package is totally new, with fewer but larger thrust engines. Extra space is afforded with the main power generation section being forty percent smaller than the legacy versions, yet producing thirty percent more energy, due to the rapid development of Tauri technology.

The ship will carry more weapons than on previous versions, including the plasma cannon, used with great success on both the BB320 and DD-100 ships. There are now eighteen VLS tubes and the Mk X missile is carried as standard. The magazines for the railguns have received a much-needed upgrade, with capacity and speed of loading increased.

Overall, the ship’s armour has also received a boost, with a multi layered veneer of Trinium, titanium and hardened steel. Over most areas of the ship, this is a minimum of 750mm. Shielding has been improved with an additional four shield generators, each with their own independent Naquada power pack.

Crewing has been increased with the addition of extra flight crews and their respective maintenance teams, and the ship will now carry 300 marines or ground troops, depending on mission requirements. The Daedalus will be recommissioned in the latter half of 2023, with the others of the class following at six month intervals.
