So what makes you think you can just waltz in, overthrow the familiar rulers, and claim the title of king, regardless of your genealogical justification? Even if you shit gold and fart prosperity and can wipe out those pesky griffon states with the power of your mind alone, 'Tia's still a very popular ruler and you're still violently overthrowing her. You'll barely be able to keep the kingdom in line with the heaviest iron hoof you can muster, and you can't fart out of your hoof, especially if it's made of iron.

The Equestria of old use to stretch from beyond the Crystal Mountains to far into the so called Dragon Lands. Celestia has let her enemies chip away at Equestria for more than 2000 years! The Gryphons carve chunk out of chunk every century, the dragons fly through our territory without opposition or care! She left Luna in the Moon! I had to free her! And she left Discord unguarded in the open! The Changelings where the last straw, the last sign of my sister's foolishness. When I am king everypony will fear our banners, we will not be pushed back. I'll return Equestria to its former glory, the kingdom that my parents built.

Oh that stuff hasn't happened yet, my invasion happens before all that. Yah says it in the script. Thats all 'future' stuff. And no I would not have been fooled, changelings are easy to spot, you catch them before they infiltrate. And there is no excuse for leaving Luna in there for so long. Admittingly my method took a thousand years, but it work! She had all that time to free her but didn't.
