Description This is the stamp I dedicate to my favorite Simpsons couple: Burns/Smithers Senior.

Before you can said anything, let me tell you my reasons.

Of all the couples that I have felt a deep affection, this certainly was the most excited me. I can’t deny that this is an unusual couple, maybe even unthinkable, because Smithers Sr. appeared only once in the entire series. No mention at all.
So surely be filled with questions about why this couple, what is their credibility, not just noticing Burns/Smithers Jr. despite my support of them (but with slight differences, not exactly the same), but let me give my arguments and references directly related to the episode The Blunder Years (issued on December 9, 2001).

Before watching the episode on television, and had the notion that Mr. Burns was an evil man and carefree, not interested in anything more than money (I not even know the Smithers Jr. thing because I saw the Simpsons accidentally). This is a man who feels no affection for anyone, concerned only their material resources and to gain more wealth, even using harmful methods to achieve this. But seeing that episode (even if it also accidentally), completely changed my perspective on this person and his real feelings. In any episode I laughed and had fun, but this case I cries. Cries for the death of Smithers Sr. and what led him to it, cry for the expression of pain in Mr. Burns’s face after the film. I discovered almost immediately that there was something more behind the event (We can say that I’m deep-minded and I am not content with what I see at first). I saw the episode via online again and again to memorize it and analyze it so much better. To reach these conclusions:
At the beginning of the episode when we were in the spectacle of Mesmerino, he approached to Burns and Smithers Jr. confusing them as father and son. But Smithers denied it, adding that his father actually died long ago. I note that when Mesmerino went to find another volunteer, are back to those two, I noticed on the face of Burns. Not showing all the face, but it shows that he’s sad and downcast. Mesmerino perhaps even realized it, because was wondering if anyone else which would not be depressed. Burns with head downcast because inadvertently Smithers has just remembered him the death of Smithers Sr.
Mr. Burns was very upset; you could tell it was not a pleasant memory. The bonus that made me suspicious and then convinces a closer relationship, perhaps even bitter, that's when he tries to stop Smithers Sr. to enters the reactor. If he even he grab his arm! He may well have stopped him with words or gesture, even he have not done anything if he really didn’t care, but instead he was grabbing him with clear indications that he doesn’t want to let go, as if he not wants him to go away and get exposed to danger. He feared for his life. He said with pleading eyes that may have radioactive waste that can risking his life, yet Smithers Sr. knew that if he not entered the reactor would explode, killing all, his boss, and most importantly his son.

You probably would say, "If Burns was really worried for him, then why he didn’t entered to the reactor after the problem solved so he can remove him quickly from there? He stood looking outside ". Remember he had held Smithers Jr. It would be irrational to go with him in it, would be fatal for the baby.

When he look inward, we can say that at first he had hoped that Smithers Sr. came out unscathed from all this. Perhaps he even thought that the "funny faces" were to make his child laugh who also watched from the window, but seconds later he realized that he had poisoned and die there in front of them. His face goes immediately to the shock, he can’t believe it. He knew the risks but harbor hopes, so the impact is greater. Smithers Jr. gave him a smile when he said "sir", but his grief and impact didn’t fade from his eyes. Mr. Burns obviously had his reasons to keep that record, he knew that one day someone discovered the body and find where the cast come from (due the entrance of the pipe is in the same office, perhaps Burns took the body of his friend from the reactor up there to throw). You probably say, "If Mr. Burns would have really care of him, should give him a decent burial and have not thrown him like garbage". We all know that Burns is a selfish one, so much that he threw the body for a personal reason. He mentioned that he did it was because that kind of cover-ups were in vogue in the 50’s (Smithers Sr. died in 1954), but would be entirely the reason? In part yes. But think so, Mr. Burns loved Smithers Sr., and being selfish with all the others, would not surprise me not want to share his pain with others (either by a funeral). So he throw away and made disappear his body for suffer alone and bring grief to himself, leaving the uncertainty of the friends of his assistant for a while until Burns himself told them of what happened to his friend. Smithers himself probably didn’t want to happen it, but how you can change the mentality of someone who was evil since most of his life? It's impossible!

Burns felt for him more than just a simple affection, you'll note when the film ended and we could see his face full of pain, anguish and even nostalgia for the happy memories.
In all the time that followed the film, we see that, apart from two occasions when he said some funny reference, remained sad until the end. So why not tell the truth to Smithers Jr. and invented a false story? There are personal reasons apart of not wanting to affect seriously to Smithers. To Burns a recall hurts, it hurts deeply to have to remember and more if he has to tell someone, even if it's the son of his dearest person. Nobody wants to remember the day when someone loved dies, he want to remember the happy times he shared with him. So at the beginning (after the Simpsons and Chief Wiggum entered the office of Burns) he said had waited for this day for 30 years. A relief in part because surely after the incident, Burns must have felt remorse for having thrown the body of his friend (at the end you regret certain actions); want to end this agony. But equally unwelcome on the other hand, it would mean to see the film (apart than to prove his innocence) and relive the fateful day!

That indicates that Burns never forgot Smithers Sr., keeps him this every day. Moreover, it is a love that he keeps closely in the heart. Which nobody, not even Smithers Jr. has found, because we saw that Burns is enough selfish to keep the rest of the world regardless of his real feelings.

This is different, because although Burns is more interested in women, those he have forgotten or don’t last long in a romance, while Smithers Sr. has never forgotten. Just remembered Minsy and Lily Bancroft when Burns faced with his son Larry in "Burns, Baby Burns" and tells about his past (Burns seems like he miss her, but then pretends nothing. He doesn’t care about it). Also in an episode when Homer is carried to the cemetery to visit the tomb of the wife who never was, Gertrude. It was thought that he missed and regretted abandoning her and devotes more time to his work and his money. But after a while he cares most of his work and money, as is visibly angry that Homer has taken his position as owner of the plant. Obvious that Burns had other affairs with other women; as Gloria in "Hunka Hunka Burns in Love", but the romances are short and Burns forget them in the end. Smithers Sr. instead ... don’t forget him and he keep loving him even after death.

I dare say that forgetting is one thing, while you're interested is very different.

Returning to the episode ... If it was the radiation that killed Smithers, Burns may well have closed the plant, but perhaps Smithers Sr. didn’t want to happen it even if something wrong happens to him. It was his place of work, next to Burns. His boss would feel so too, is where he and his assistant walked, talked and shared moments. Close the plant would close the memories of Burns and Smithers there. What he remains it open and operating for him.

Now Waylon's own case, it is certainly he also loved Burns. His very name refers to: Waylon Smithers, who shares the same name as his son and which is an anagram of "Wants him sorely," referring to the love for Burns. More difficult is that because the context in which Waylon Sr. lived. A mid-twentieth century had not respect homosexuals. Before he’s going to be called Ernest K. Smithers, but instead the producers changed the name to Waylon Smithers Sr. Why? Is it because they wanted to show by implication a possible love between Smithers and Mr. Burns? Smithers Sr. even called him "Monty" instead of "sir" or "Mr. Burns" as should be treated as boss-assistant. It involves a profound closeness. If so, then you ask why he married a woman and started a family. Let’s say Waylon loved Mr. Burns but eventually came to believe that Burns was only interested in women and that he would not make a possibility. Unlike Smithers Jr. who may suffer from the impossibility, Smithers Sr. knew how difficult it was his situation due to the time and how bad that he likes another man, suffered in silence and kept that love in the most deep in his heart. Being next to his boss every day is enough to relieve his anguish. He doesn’t need anything else. He allowed to love a woman and share some of his life, but doesn’t mean he stop loving his boss, for it so close that interaction, trust that Burns had to take care of his son as he entered the reactor . Waylon Smithers Sr. was the dear friend of Mr. Burns, as he originally said. "Dear" is a term very deep, dye to love. It was more than his best friend, was the love of his life and Burns regrets not telling his feelings when he was alive, and is seen in the pain on his face.

Smithers Sr. he had enough confidence to let his son to Burns, and to honor his memory, kept alive the image of his love, Smithers Jr. grew up to be like his father. Therefore, even though his current assistant was once a son to him, Burns raised him not to be like him, but equal to his father, so he can occupy the space Smithers Sr. left vacated. Burns sees in his assistant, his late father. It might therefore Burns be in love with Smithers Jr.? Yes and no. Smithers Jr. is almost equal to his father, but has his differences: His absolute devotion to his boss (as always idolize) unlike the possible equality that Smithers Sr. gave his boss. Which is separated from his wife to be with Burns, doing more of what his father would have done in life is what counts for Burns to love him for being himself, not only for being the son of his friend. And now today where tolerance and freedom are stronger, so that mere gestures can become open demonstrations of affection.

This was added to you make me believe that I also love Burns/Smithers Jr. Mr. Burns can come to love Waylon Jr. and I hope so, only a party to the depths of his heart will always be Waylon Sr. The mirror Has two faces as theater, Burns/Smithers Jr. would be the funny side of love, while Burns/Smithers Sr. would be tragic side.

Another thing I want to add is the time that Mr. Burns and Smithers related. Before I didn’t think too much until I saw "The Color Yellow". In the gala scene, we see Colonel Burns (Monty's grandfather) being accompanied by someone identical to Smithers, which would mean that this person would be Smithers Jr.’s grandfather. So the father of Smithers Sr. as well. As Colonel Burns raised Monty Burns when he was a child, maybe during that period when Smithers was father. And following a possible family tradition, this child (Waylon) would be the future personal servant of Monty Burns. Thus it is possible that both grew up together (as Waylon is younger than Monty, but not much) and worked together. Perhaps at some point in adulthood (possibly during World War II) fell in love, but they had reason to keep it, taking the years until Smithers Sr.’s death and Monty Burns current life with his assistant.

So this is the couple that moved me most, and the main of The Simpsons fandom. The second would be Burns/Smithers Jr. for obvious reasons.

I see the tragic side of love, it is what excites me most (up even on the verge of tears), and that nevertheless is the hardest. Real love doesn’t die even if one of the lovers passed away.

Hopefully tolerate what you just read, and if you like so much the couple as the argument you just read, are welcome to comment.

Song I dedicate to them:
