Description FIRST: Link and Zelda
PREVIOUS: Rito
NEXT: Armotaur

Upon reaching Rito Village on Dragon Roost Island, you learn that a monster has taken over the home of the Ritos' guardian deity, Faron the Thunder Dragon. To end the perpetual cyclone that has trapped the Rito on their own island, Link and Zelda must escort the Marin the Shrine Maiden to the summit of the mountain and the region's dundeon, the Dragon Shrine, so that she can summon Faron. The Dragon Shrine will be a very vertical dungeon that has elements of an escort mission out of The Wind Waker and hiding mechanics like the Scarecrow encounters in Batman: Arkham Asylum, because as you're ascending the spire, you'll be under attack from the dungeon's boss, False Dragon God: GLEEOK

Gleeok will also count as the sub-boss of the dungeon as you'll actually have to fight him multiple times. Periodically, Gleeok will burst through a wall or stick one of his heads in through an opening, attacking you with an elemental breath weapon. When he sticks a head in through a hole, you'll either have to hide from his gaze, avoid his attack if spotted, or shoot it to force it to retreat. But if he bursts through a wall, then you'll have to fight him head on, only chasing him away once you've done enough damage to him.

Put once you've reached the shrine at the summit, he'll face you in earnest. His tactics will be similar to how they are in Tears of the Kingdom, where he'll attack you from the air and you'll have to shoot him down with headshots of a different element than that particular head. If you don't have arrows, you can also have Marin assist you. As with Medli in The Wind Waker, she has the Mirror Shield which can reflect elemental attacks. Once you've done enough damage to Gleeok, he'll start launching devastating meteor attacks, which you can use against him by using them to get high enough to attack.

Once Gleeok is slain, Marin is able to play on her harp and sing , summoning Faron to clear the storm. Marin then awakens as the Sage of Wind and adds her power to yours. As with the Thunder Helm from Breath of the Wild, Chieftain Elrora will give you the Mirror Shield if you do enough side quests for the Ritos. The Hylian Shield will also be in Ways of the Hero, acting like it does in Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. The difference is that the Hylian Shield has very high durability but can break requiring you to buy a new one while the Mirror Shield is like the Master Sword, restoring itself over a period of time, but it has less durability than the Hylian Shield.

Also, you unlock Faron's Trial of Courage for clearing the dungeon. You'll unlock Eldin's Trial of Power and Lanayru's Trial of Wisdom once you've completed their regions' dungeons. Completing a trial will unlock more of the Master Sword's power. Completing all three trials before completing the Temple of Time will unlock alternate bosses for that dungeon.

Unlike Tears of the Kingdom, there is only one Gleeok but he is much larger than the ones found in that game. Instead of Gleeoks, normal dragons will be overworld bosses. For the most part, they'll behave the same as the Gleeoks but with just one head and there will only be three types: Volvagia the Fire Dragons, Blizzagia the Ice Dragons, and Thundagia the Lightning Dragons. You can get an idea of what each type of dragon looks like by looking at Gleeok's individual heads. Instead of being black-gold, the three dragons will be either shades of red, blue, or green with a gray head and white horns.

Notes:
  • One of my goals for Ways of the Hero is to bring back the classic bosses from the first The Legend of Zelda.
  • While I like the Gleeoks from Tears of the Kingdom, I made the dragons here look more like classical dragons. I modeled Gleeok on Volga from Hyrule Warriors which in turn is based on Volvagia from Ocarina of Time. Gleeok's fire head even has horns like Volga and Volvagia. I made the ice head's horns resemble icicles and the thunder head's resemble lightning.
  • Volvagia is from Ocarina of Time and Adventure of Link and Blizzagia is from Tri Force Heroes. I used the same naming convention to make Thundagia.
  • Gleeok's black and gold color scheme is based another three-headed dragon: Ghidorah from the Godzilla franchise, particularly Keizer Ghidorah.
  • The conflict between Gleeok and Faron is based on the conflict between Valoo and Gohma from The Wind Waker and the Nightmare and the Wind Fish from Link's Awakening.
