Description Lorelai Gilmore awoke with a start. What? What is that? she wondered sleepily.
The room was pitch black, so it was late…or early depending on the day of the week. The weekend had just ended, so Lorelai had to be up early to open the Dragonfly Inn, the inn at the edge of town that she owned with her best friend Sookie St. James.
Her phone was ringing loudly, pulling the sleep farther and farther away from her.
Lorelai groaned and rolled over to look at the alarm clock beside her bed. The red glow of the numbers hurt her eyes at first, but when they finally adjusted to the light, she sighed. The red numbers read 4:24 am. Who would be calling me at 4 am!? Rory? Is something wrong with Rory!?
“Hello?” she said, her voice heavy with sleep.
“Lorelai?” It was her mother, Emily.
“Yeah, Mom. Who else has this phone number?”
“There’s no need to be snotty, Lorelia.”
“Um, yeah, there kinda is. You’re calling me at four in the morning.”
“It’s important….”
“What? You got a new Chanel suit? Oh, let me guess, there’s some high falutin shindig that you want me to attend?”
“Lorelia….”
“That’s it, isn’t it? Well it couldn’t have waited? I know you get up early, Mom, but four am, really?”
“Lorelai, it’s your father….” Emily said.
“What about him? He knows I’m not up this early.”
“He’s dead, Lorelai.”
Lorelia felt like she had just been punched in the stomach, the wind knocked out of her.
“What?” she managed.
“He had another heart attack. This one….this one was fatal.”
Oh, my God… Lorelai thought. Dad…..
“Listen, I won’t keep you, I have to call a lot of people. I just wanted to let you know.”
“Thanks, Mom. I-I’ll call Rory.”
“All right. I’ll call you with details for the funeral.”
“Mom….”
“Goodnight, Lorelai.”
Before Lorelai could reply, Emily hung up.
The room was suddenly quiet and Lorelai could feel her heart beating in ears. Her dad was dead? Richard Gilmore, dead? It didn’t seem possible. For all of her life, her father had been this larger-than-life presence. Growing up, she’d favored him over her mother, who she couldn’t help but wonder had resented that fact.
Tears sprang to her eyes, but she brushed them away. She couldn’t break down, not right now. She had to call Rory and let her know.
Lorelai hit the speed dial button and the phone started ringing. Come on, Rory, pick up the phone!
After what seemed an eternity, Rory picked up.
“Hello?” Rory’s voice was weighed down with exhaustion.
“Hey, honey,” Lorelai said.
“Mom? What’s wrong? Is everything okay?”
“I have some bad news, sweetie.”
“What?” Rory’s voice was strong now, awake.
“I just got a call from your grandmother. Grandpa passed away.”
At the words, Lorelai felt a stab of grief in her chest, as if saying the words made them real.
“What!?”
“He had another heart attack.”
“When?”
“She didn’t say. You know how your grandmother avoids showing emotion. She’s going to call me back later with details about the funeral.”
“I’ll be there. I’ll catch a flight and be home in a few hours.”
“I’m so sorry, honey. I know how much he meant to you.”
“I’m sorry, too, Mom.”
“Thanks.”
“Text me your flight number and I’ll pick you up at the airport.
“Okay. I’ll see you soon.”
“All right. Bye.”
“Bye.”
As soon as she disconnected, Lorelai choked out a sob and her whole body started shaking. Her dad was dead. Her daddy.  Every girl needs her daddy…..
