Description lady is an old fashioned Victorian tank engine who serves as one of the last of the original steam locomotive templates.

She used to pull holiday trains to and from London in the late 1800s. By the turn of the century her usefulness was limited with the arrival of bigger and stronger engines brought in to replace her and her colleagues. She found a new lease of life working as a station pilot at London Victoria, but as the first world war came around she was once again forced to step down due to her lack of strength compared to newer engines.

She was kept in storage for a time until she was called to the North Western Railway on Sodor as a spare engine. She arrived around the same time as a brand new young tank engine from Brighton who was brought in to serve as the station pilot at Vicarstown. Throughout the war, Lady took it upon herself to tutor the youngster with handling coaches, moulding him into an effective station pilot. She came to care very much for the tank engine and became something of a mother figure to him, she even gave him the name 'Thomas' after the Vicarstown stationmaster who lost his life during an nightime air raid. When the war ended she was called back to London and had to say goodbye to Thomas, but left assured that he would do fine.

After being stored in a shed at London Victoria again, she was promptly restored and sent to work for the newly formed Southern Railway, where she soon found herself running a branch line from Sidley to Bexhill West staion, which had the nickname 'Shining Time' by the local townspeople. She continued to run this line single-handedly all the way through WWII and Nationalisation in 1948, before she finally retired from the branch line and replaced by a standard class 2 in 1952.

From there she was sold on to the National Coal Board as she was small and cheap enough to maintain, and sent to work in a collary up north. She found the work to be somewhat okay, as most of her life did revolve around shunting so she learned how to control trucks fairly quickly, but she could've done without a class 42 diesel that would stop by the collary she worked in later years. He would constantly make threatening gestures at her and she would just ignore him. But one day, after a particularly insulting remark from the diesel, she talked back with a superiorly snarky comment, which resulted in uncontrollable laughter from all over the collary and humiliating the diesel. He left vowing to end her life himself.

One night in 1960, Lady was steamed up to perform night duties outside of the collary, where she was most vulnerable from rogue diesels. Just as she finished, she was attacked by the class 42 diesel who had come to take her for scrap. Lady's driver, Burnett Stone, quickly drove Lady away down the tracks as the deisel chased them, away from the collary and onto the main line. This action went unoticed by the signalman, and so all three runaways were unaware of a night goods train coming in the opposite direction on the same line. Burnett was able to steer Lady onto a siding just in time, with the diesel colliding head on with the train, killing the goods and his crew, but leaving the diesel with repairable damage. However, Lady was going to fast to stop safely, and steered straight off a sharp bend and into a ditch. The sudden jolted stop caused Burnett to slam his head against Lady's cab, which resulted in his own death.

Lady was on her own. Lost. Forgotten. Alone.

Then one day in 2010, she was rediscovered by a group of boys who were hiking in the forest close to Barrow-In-Furness. Her discovery hit the media, and grabbed the attention of the Fat Controller. he quickly arranged for her to be recovered and brought to his railway for inspection at Crovans Gate. Her lack of human contact for four decades left her very skittish and unable to speak to anyone. The Fat Controller checked up her history, including her time on Sodor before, and knew exactly who to help her get back on her feet. Sure enough, Thomas was sent to Crovans Gate to greet Lady, who was unsure if she knew this engine or not. After an emotional reaction from Thomas, who was heart-stressed to see his old friend in such a state, she soon remembered him and broke down into tears, happy to see her old student. She was soon repaired to working condition and assigned to work on Thomas' branch line to help with the passenger traffic alongside Thomas and Daisy. She still has nightmares about her past experiences, but has Thomas and his friends to help her overcome that and start anew.

Even so, she can never shake the uneasy feeling that she'll see that diesel again. One way, or another...

~~

In her youth, Lady was full of energy and was very proactive, which enabled her to always take out the early morning trains. She was also a lot more sensible and respinsible with her work that most other engines, due to the impression her first driver's wife had on her. As the years went on, she learned to accept the changing world around her after being shunted and rellocated several times, and even offering a few words of wisdom to younger engines. During her time with Thomas, she showed to have a motherly side, being protective over his wellbeing and making sure he did his work without fussing. Despite her apparent 'do it right' description, she's not above silly behavior, always having time for a good laugh and making quick nips at someones flaws every now and then. She grew a sarcastic nature during nationalisation, as proved when she publicly verbally humliated a diesel. She's also quite brave as well, risking life to escape said on the main line without controls knowledge.

But after her accident and isolation for 40 years, she had forgotten all about her to comuicate with others and would often be seen silently crying to herself. But when she was reintroduced to Thomas, she was able to let go of all her trauma and remember all that she experienced and learned in her life. With Thomas' help, she has slowly began to regain her old personality as well as educating the bigger engines on many occasions, more often when they get too boastful and end up eating their own words.

Nice backstory. Where in the world did you find that Lady model? I've checked everywhere on eBay, but everything is so expensive! You're so lucky!

Amazing! I love the Lady of the movie, but this... this is how Lady should have been written for the fans. Poor girl I'd look after her if I could. A beautiful model! You do her justice.
