Mattel said that they would be updating their new wood line of Thomas merch, and they meant it. Already, the new models look much better than their first version, with no traces of plain wood anywhere on the engines, now completely covered in colour and striking some nice detail. Of course, some of the new features are kept on, such as the block appearance and spaces in the coaches and vehicles for people characters. It's not the classic wooden engines, but it shows that Mattel are willing to make improvement if they hear us clearly enough.Related content

One thing I would like better is if Rosie's tanks are properly sloped, like on her classic TWR toy, as would the tenders on the tender engines be 3D, again like the originals.
And of course, I would be buying Cranky if the track were connected like the classic TWR track (yes, I know they come with adapters, but still) and if he came with two Troublesome Trucks (to load the cargo pieces in alongside Bulstrode).

All that James and Good needs to be longer and their tenders need to be back to the shapes they were in TWR.

Looks like they've been listening to us.
They look pretty great now. I think the only update they need to do is make the characters like Gordon, Hugo and Diesel 10 longer, make the buffers black and something to cover up the gaps in the coaches.

they still have no domes! Never trust domeless engines, they aren't respectable. and all that has to be done is just replace these blocks of wood with their predecessors.

The tender engines aside from Emily don't look great, but the tank engines and Diesels look good.

Getting there... Still not 100% satisfied with what they've done, but they're getting there.
Still that "tip-of-the-iceberg" issue to correct, than not only will be fully happy with the franchise, but Mattel might save the franchise from collapsing...

Even if the wooden models are a little too plastic and flashy looking for my taste. The toy designers did put some fine effort in making the characters look like their Jam Filled Animation CGI 3D molds.

Finally Mattel at least got ONE of their merch lines somewhat fixed. I hope one day they can do the same with the die-cast.
