Description [EDIT] Since people have mentioned it ;3 I didn't make the cranes the traditional way, they're made so they flap their wings when you grip the lower front portion and pull the tail, it's just how I prefer to do it. I'm aware that means they don't look 100% like the traditional ones, think of it as another aspect of making the whole thing personal...

In regards to the shot and my school application, it along with four other images on the theme of identity and a write up about them got me an interview though in the end I didn't end up getting a place at LCA, instead as part of my portfolio it helped get me a place on another course I much preferred and will be will be starting in September X3

Thanks so much for all the faves and comments, they're greatly appreciated~
______________

Possibly one of the photos I'm going to be submitting for my application to Leeds College of Art and Design, they requested four photographs on the theme of 'Identity'.
I'm not sure if I've gone a little too abstract with the theme or not, I'll be explaining my thought process behind this shot when I write about it anyway but I wanted to do a more conceptual self portrait of sorts.

We all have many things that make up our identities, different aspects of ourselves and our lives that make us who we are. Each crane is covered on a short passage about myself, one for my beliefs, my history and the people in my life, my interests, my personality, my ambitions and one left blank for the things yet to shape me.

I chose cranes because while it's never been a conscious decision I always have a paper crane on my desk and I wanted to use a series of things that where otherwise identical because identity in a psychological sense stems from the idea of sameness and continuance.

Please feel free to critique this if you have chance, I would really appreciate any and all input. ^^

Impact

I think that in concept this piece on identity is strong. It's definitely a different and original way through photography to portray who you are and who you've yet to become. It definitely derails from just a standard "here's where I love" or "here is my family" this is who I am type thing. it shows pieces and complexity and yet, in a way I think that the sameness of the birds derails entirely from what you wanted to achieve.

Identity is a need to be different, pieces that make up a unique person. We're not all made of the same, identical, well fitting pieces. We're unique combination of people, environment and events. It's those combination that make us strong and unique as people, and I think to the opposite degree its the sameness that takes away some of the impact of what this piece could be.

I think another thing that impacts the quality of this deviation is the background and the use of bokeh. I'm usually amoung the biggest admirers of your photos and I love your use of colours and bokeh and to bring the attention to the foreground and subject of your photo. In this particular piece I find it almost does the opposite though. The colours distract from the black and white birds, and the background in its own way almost over powers them, my eye is drawn to it instead of the focus of the imagine which should be the cranes. The fact most of the birds are blurred out seems to go against your reason for the piece as well. Instead of showing the different pieces that have made you who you are, its as is only a couple things are being focused on and matter; and getting to know you as I have since last year I know you're a much more complex person that that.

Beautiful photo! <3 I was looking for images to reference in my context of practice essay when I came across this, not going to use it but noticed you mentioned LCA! Did you end up getting in to Leeds Arts just under a different course? (I just thought it was cool because I started studying there in September for Animation - it's changed its name to Leeds Arts University now)

(I am superbly inactive on this site so I'm sorry if I just did dA version of liking an old instagram pic lol)

This is a wonderful concept! I love the photo, too! The cranes are really adorable. Was there a tutorial for the type of cranes you make, or did you figure it out yourself? I would really like to make cranes that can flap their wings. ^_^

I usually avoid commenting on other people's "self-portraits" as, well... even if you're putting yourself on display, it's really-really personal. but here, with this, i cannot resist. i look at this as this as a top-shelf snapshot/mirror/insight into you as an artist and how you think about (you=your work). it's good to see you challenge yourself and to see that you are seeing yourself in inspiring new ways (or as you just did for me, i hope you do for yourself).
In addition to all of that, the work itself stands on it's own, as more than a self-portrait.
(as an aside, this is something i also find compelling in your dollwork)
This is truly an excellent work.

I'm afraid I can't offer you an in-depth critique as you have already received on this, but I can offer my opinion ^^

I think this is amazing. The thought behind this is fascinating, and it was actually the title that drew me towards this. I love the concept.

Visually, this is a lovely photo - the background texture and colours are beautiful, and the depth of field and composition of the cranes are perfect.

It's good to hear that you got into a course you're excited about. I hope it all goes well for you

This has just got something about it. As a writer I appreciate the -written on- notepaper and as a Creative I appreciate the composition of this image. I go to art galleries and take part in art appreciation often, but I'm the type that's there debating about what art really is and saying what I mean about pieces. Sure, if I like something, I can make up ridiculous fancy compliments and pseudo-mystical comments but do they really portray my feelings any better? Or just that I think I'm intelligent enough to steal a great piece of artworks thunder?

So I try not to be that type and whilst this one does unnaturally conjure up all kinds of thoughts, as to the subtle but stark colour tones and the depth, I will merely say that it really pleases my eyes and satisfies my instinct. I could stare at it for ages.

Jamie
