Geinen In reply to Fibre-Optik [2008-09-06 03:12:39 +0000 UTC]
The preliminary sketch took 90% of the total drawing time. This means days and days of mapping and measuring. I used a version of the grid method to get the proportions exactly right. There are variations however, the forehead is a lot shorter, certain angles I changed because I figured it looked a bit better. The actual drawing portion - shading - took less than a day. So you can see where all the effort in these drawings go.
Tracing would have been the most accurate and fastest way to do it, but I like to achieve the likeness on my own...I mean, why put in all the effort to do a realism drawing if it took no effort to get it looking real? There would be no point.
But do take a look at some of the other portrait drawings on this site that have great likeness to their originals. If you ask each artist what they did to achieve it, they will tell you - days and days of planning, mapping and measurement.

thanks a lot for getting back to me. i am not too fond of the mapping/grid method...but obviously it yields some spectacular results...would you care to elaborate so that i may be able to implement it in the near future?
i appreciate the reply!

The grid method is only a pain in the ass when you're drawing square by square, thats not what I mean. I use the grid only for proportions when making the first outline.
The smaller the squares, the higher the accuracy. All you want to do is map down where everything is...where the eyes nose and mouth are...the outline of the face..etc etc. It is the hardest part of the entire drawing. Once the basic outline is done, you start drawing without the aid of the grid (Im not fond of the grid method past this point either).
Also try using lightly dotted lines for the grid. Dots are easier to work into your shading...and they wont leave any noticeable marks as the lines can sometimes do.

What paper/pencils did you use? Getting a skin texture like that takes some mad skills...
