Description This little thing surprised me one day, by jogging it's way through the grass.
It was a rather interesting animal so I decided to snap a few shots of it. The photo is (c) to me and is only posted on this account on DA.

G'day!

The good thing was that the grass was dry and it hadn't rained too much so the floor wasn't muddy. Well thank you!

Yeah, camouflage is useful to the animals that can hide well in their surroundings, but sadly that's also the reason why they often don't stend out like this. Thanks for the comment, and I dunno what gender the mantis is , heh heh.

Hey, that's a pretty good photo! It got all the little details on the mantis.

Ya, they're creepy little guys. The first time I saw one was when it landed on my face. Very traumatic to say the least.

Nyways, great shot!

Ack! Ok that's one thing that certainly leaves you not liking the creatures that much. Well, just know they aren't that mean ..well atleast this one tried to wobble away from me and then pretend it was grass. And thank you!

Hmm... I like it! The depth of field, colors, and detail are very nice

The composition leaves much to be desired, though =-\

Could you please say what could be corrected in the composition or rather how could it be made better? Aswell thank you for your comment.

Of course.

I don't mind the lack of compression, but the fact that the mantis is centered in the frame just doesn't keep me focused on it. There's so much negative space to the left and right of it, as well as directly above it, that I can't stay focused on the mantis. I start looking at the things in the background... which just doesn't do it for me.

To correct, I would have applied the rule of thirds , because while it may not always offer compelling composition, it certainly does help in making it a little less... well, centered.

So had I taken this picture, I would have probably put the mantis on the left "third" line, put his head all the way up to the top of the frame, then offered something else in the background near the second "third" line to balance out the photo.

I would have lowered the "horizon" at the edge of the grass to the top third, and left the bottom third alone. A top-heavy picture makes me feel full; a bottom-heavy one makes me feel empty. The top-heavy picture gives me a sense of chaos and excitement; top-heavy things normally topple over, you know? It gives me a sort of suspense, it makes me keep looking. A bottom-heavy picture can work, provided the subject feels grounded enough to boldly do whatever it was going to do.

[please excuse the split infinitive]

But that's just what I woulda done. I'm a lousy photographer, so feel free to disregard this information then point and laugh

Thank you for a very informational feedback. I'll look to it in the future! I would hardly wish to disregard this , after all it's good feedback and trying out different ways is the only way to make things better!

Thanks again for your time taken to post this and sorry for such a late responce as my DA is still having problems with showing past comments, which means i get to see them all (the ones i have not yet replied to) every once in a life time. And it's usually at the times I have the least time on my hands!
