Description So, if I'm just a "casual fan" of the new My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic cartoon series, why did I just spend a YEAR (yes, 12 months) working on a huge Fluttershy plushie with very little prior sewing experience?

Because I wanted to celebrate the fact that Tails, from the Sonic The Hedgehog series, has been my favourite animated character for nearly two decades... and he was dethroned by Fluttershy! : O

When I started getting into MLP:FiM and got to understand the various characters better, I couldn't believe how much Fluttershy reminded me of my younger self. Each episode that developed her character just made me identify with her more and more, and because of the slightly tragic slant her character has, and knowing from experience what being in that kind of position is like, I just wanted to give her a great big hug. X3

...and then after scouring the net I realized how few people were making giant pony plushies and it occurred to me that doing so would not only benefit my interest in the character and my interest in plushies, but also my desire to try making a plushie myself, and could also be unintentionally promotional, both in the good "oh that's so cute!" way and the lame "what a pervert, probably does naughty things with her" way. Which is fine, the internet will be the internet. : P

So, around the end of the first season of MLP:FiM I started getting to work on my plushie. I used my experience in 3D modelling to help me visualise the 2D pieces that would potentially make a pony shape, and with some helpful advice from who had made some very adorable pony plushies already, I got started on my first prototype... which you can see in the bottom left corner of this photo mosaic.

...yeah, it didn't turn out so well, but I learned a lot in the process, including how to begin and end my stitches, how to deal with corners, what kind of things worked, what didn't, etc. etc.

By this point in time I had already ordered the fabric: 7 yards of short-pile Velboa faux fur, 4 in yellow, 3 in pink, and that alone set me back over $75, so I was committed. I started work on a second prototype that was going to fix the mistakes I made, but it wasn't turning out well in the design phase and thus I never even attempted to sew it. The third prototype was another attempt to fix the original's design mistakes but when I tried to sew it there were so many sizing mistakes I couldn't keep doing it.

Also, I was starting to question why I was making a plushie that STOOD. If it was going to be huge, it would never be able to stand under its own weight, and taking it to bed to cuddle to sleep with wouldn't work out so well either. This is about the point in time when I came across an adorable Braeburn pony plushie made by , and it was in a laying down position!

Inspired by this, I completely redesigned my plushie into a laying-down position for the fourth prototype, and this time I actually finished sewing it. Much to my surprise, there were few problem areas and what problems there were I could easily solve, so I made the corrections and started getting prepped to do the real deal!

First, I needed to make the pattern pieces... out of just over 100 sheets of printer paper taped together. It was... pretty crazy. It took about a week just to get the pattern pieces themselves assembled so I could draw them out on my fabric, and I only had about 6 inches of tape left when I was done. ^_^;

Cutting the pieces out was pretty time consuming too and also took about a week. Though I also needed to make the eyes and butterflies. I had bought some felt to this end and was going to just stitch it on with matching thread colours, but I rapidly discovered that felt looks all wrinkled when stitched, that or I was doing it wrong, so instead I learned how to felt them on with a felting needle, which itself had some problems because felt doesn't felt onto faux fur very securely. I had to create blanks for the opposite side of the fabric to felt into so that the felt wouldn't peel off.

...and felting an eye that's as big as your hand, let alone TWO of them, without a proper foam felting block... yeah... took countless hours to do. x_x;

Hand stitching this plushie together was incredibly time consuming too, and all the while I was worried that maybe I didn't size it out too well, or that some of my pieces would be screwed up in some way and would fail to work out. By this point, I was already $150 in the hole from material costs. (Though in the long run, the remaining $50 worth of stuffing was gifted to me by my mother, so $150 was as much as I spent of my own money on this project.)

I reasoned though that so long as I worked on it at least a little every day, it would eventually be finished. And sure enough, that strategy worked, because right around the start of May this year, I finished it! : D

She's not a technically perfect plushie by any means, given my only basic knowledge of sewing and my inexperience, and I made a lot of mistakes in the pattern itself, which I had to correct on-the-fly either by adjusting how I was stitching or by actually cutting the fabric back mid-stitch, but in the end, I ended up with a whole, sealed plushie and I can finally give Fluttershy all the hugs I could ever want to! X3

Although I have no intention of selling her, I'm hoping this story of how I built her is inspiring to all of you who want a pony plushie but don't have the skill to build one or the money to buy one from someone else. While it was extremely time consuming, I was able to do it with what little sewing skill I had, so by that logic, ANYONE could do it! All you need is the drive to learn and the patience to see the project through to the end! : D

...and not be upset with the fact that the end result will be far from perfect. : P

As for the prototypes, I can't sell them either because I kinda gave them to my mother. ; )

Wow she is a beaut! I am trying to work out a large laying pony myself as a gift for my niece Β

How did ya work out the proportions though? I am not a very good pony plush maker, I have a hard time figuring out the pieces and all for ponies

I sort of made a tracing first in 2 dimensions of the shape I wanted, then made some very rough estimates as to how it would shape itself in 3 dimensions. For instance, for the legs, I figured out how wide I wanted them to be, then used the math equation to determine aΒ circumference given a particular diameter, divided by 2 given that the legs would be made out of two pieces, and ended up with the width each piece would have to be, not counting the extra margin. I made my basic shapes first and added the sewing margins after.Β  : B

One thing I also did was used spacing pieces down the middle of the body and head to make the shape more round, since if you just put two flat pieces directly together they'll form a sort of oval shape as opposed to a round shape. Again, I determined how wide I wanted the body and head to be, compared to how tall I wanted it, then mathematically calculated how wide the spacing needed to be.

So yeah, math helped me a lot.Β Β ; )

Theoretically speaking, if I saved up like 500 bucks and sent it to you, would you be able to recreate one? I'm located in Alberta so I'm sure shipping wouldn't be that big of a deal.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gemini000 In reply to mr-bigmouth-502 [2013-08-24 12:34:03 +0000 UTC]

Very no. Even working at below minimum wage, $500 wouldn't cover a fraction of the time it took to make mine, let alone the material costs and shipping costs. x_x;

Β

If you really want a custom FluttershyΒ plushie, your best bet is to learn to make it yourself (which is what I did to make mine), orΒ hire someone who's much better at sewing than I am (IE: almost everyone who's into it) to custom-make one for you, though this would be very expensive for the kind of size mine is.

Β

Basically, your best bet (unless you're rich) is to buy some supplies and learn to sew!Β  ; )

mr-bigmouth-502 In reply to Gemini000 [2013-08-24 12:48:54 +0000 UTC]

That's understandable. All I took into account were the material costs and what I thought would be a decent profit margin, but I can see where you're coming from with the amount of effort required and how much you would be earning per hour of working on it.

As for making one myself, that is actually a possibility. My stepmother has a sewing machine and could probably give me a few pointers on how to use it, though she's really not a big fan of plushies. I could probably figure it out myself if need be, since I distinctly remember using one in 8th grade Home-Ec to create a cooking apron. I didn't think it was that great, owing to my perfectionist tendencies, but everyone else seemed impressed with it.

I've also been playing around with the idea of buying a smaller Fluttershy plush from Ebay, but they're hard to find at a decent price, and most of them don't look like they would work well as pillows. People may think it's a strange idea, but come on, how can a person not want to cuddle Fluttershy?

You don't need a sewing machine either. I HAND-STITCHED mine...

...partly explains why it took so long, but my experiece with sewing machines prior was less than ideal, plus hand stitches are stronger than machine stitches.Β  ; )

How do you get her to be floppy? All mine turn out stiff... Do you think I'm stuffing mine too much?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gemini000 In reply to CinnamonToast-OwO [2013-06-20 12:27:14 +0000 UTC]

Actually, it's only her joints which are floppy really. The rest of her is fairly firm though not overly firm.

Something I discovered awhile back too is that not all stuffing is created equal. I used a fairly standard polyester stuffing for softness, as my other stuffing choices either weren't as soft or were much more expensive. The stuff I used cost about $25 per 5-pound bag and I went through 11 pounds of stuffing. (Still have 4 left from the third bag!)

It is also possible you're using too much stuffing, but then, firmness is a matter of preference. If you find your plushies are too stiff, just use less stuffing. If you find they're too floppy, use more. And if you can't find a good balance, you may need to try a more expensive stuffing material. ; )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CinnamonToast-OwO In reply to Gemini000 [2013-06-20 18:07:27 +0000 UTC]

We only get one kind of stuffing here, siliconised stuffing 'premium' soft fill. $13 per kilo

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gemini000 In reply to CinnamonToast-OwO [2013-06-20 19:06:29 +0000 UTC]

OK, so that's actually some of the better stuff. So that means you're probably just using too much stuffing. ; )

One thing that might help too is to fluff the stuffing up a bit before inserting it so that it's as unstuck from itself as possible. That should allow for less stuffing to fill the same amount of space more evenly.

Gemini000 In reply to RimiPlushies [2013-05-31 14:33:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm not actually giving out the pattern for the simple fact that it's not perfect. I had to make numerous corrections "on-the-fly" while I was sewing, otherwise the pieces wouldn't've gone together properly. x_x;

Because of that, it would probably be a better idea to make your own pattern. That way too you can have your plushie in whatever pose you want it in! : )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RimiPlushies In reply to Gemini000 [2013-05-31 16:03:40 +0000 UTC]

how did you make your pattern? what is the steps? what software did you use to make the pattern?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gemini000 In reply to RimiPlushies [2013-05-31 23:20:21 +0000 UTC]

Making the pattern involved basically tracing some outlines from side-views of the mane cast, figuring out what pieces I would need to make to go between the side pieces so I wouldn't end up with a flat, pony-shaped pillow, and then, after resizing them to the desired size, adding a half-inch border to them for sewing purposes. I just used Paint Shop Pro, my go-to drawing software. : )

PRINTING the pieces though was a whole other story due to their size. I went through just over 100 sheets of printer paper and spent a week cutting pieces out and taping them together to make the full-size pattern pieces. 'twas a lot of work, but nothing too complicated.

In fact, that could be said about the entire project. It wasn't hard at all, just EXTREMELY time consuming. : P

RimiPlushies In reply to Gemini000 [2013-06-01 01:05:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks about the information, and one more thing I thought that you said about using a 3D modeling, what is the software call? and how did you use that 3D modeling to help you make the pattern?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gemini000 In reply to RimiPlushies [2013-06-01 02:29:31 +0000 UTC]

Actually, you misread what I said. I used my experience with 3D software to visualize in my mind how the pieces would fit together. I never actually used a 3D program at any step of the way, though I imagine you could if you really wanted to.

The eyes were a TON of work since I didn't have a proper foam felting block and had to use some styrofoam from old packaging. I was only able to make a couple inches progress per day, so I often switched between sewing and felting the eyes or butterflies in a single day.

Actually making the shapes though was easy. Printed out a reference, cut it into its individual colours, traced those onto felt, cut them out of the felt. ; )
