Second. Well where to start? I worked incredibly hard on this gorgeous boy for the past few days and I'm very very proud of the outcome. He is on the pricier side due to all the detail and love put into him but all of my listing prices INCLUDE tracked shipping now

Aww, it reminds me of a parrot plushie I had as a kid. For some reason bird plushies are especially photogenic. Just turn them slightly and you get a whole new expression. You did a really good job with this one. It takes a lot of patience to sew in all those color details, not to mention cutting them out and sorting them in the first place.

Bravo

They're seriously soooooo photogenic   some things I've made look a LOT better in person but my bird plushies fit the frame so to speak!
Thank you so much! It was an absolute pain to do those wings if I'm honest, I think I spent about 5 or 6 hours patterning and cutting/sewing them together    and then my friend pointed out the inside of their wings weren't the same colour and I jumped for joy with the time I'd save!

I understand that. It's easier to work with a 3D space, or at least that's my experience. Painting wood is easier than painting a canvas for me, and plushies are easier for me than drawing too. Everyone has different strengths, and you're really good at what you do

I completely agree with you, I used to be somewhat good at drawing but ALWAYS lacked the imagination and that skill to process what I saw in my head onto paper   I would love to be good at drawing and traditional art again but I wouldn't swap my plush skills for the world

MadnessJones In reply to GemlettuceCreations [2019-04-19 09:40:00 +0000 UTC]

I get that. When I gave up drawing it was for writing. My drawing is passable and not nearly what I wish it could be, but that's okay because writing is what I truly love. Plushies is a newer interest for me, but as it turns out they can tell stories too

When I was a kid I wrote my own story and world with dragons in it, it was pretty awesome but I lost the journal   and when I was barely a teen I wrote a lottttttttttttttttttt of fanfiction on fanfiction.net! I absolutely loved it though

MadnessJones In reply to GemlettuceCreations [2019-04-20 07:38:48 +0000 UTC]

Funny you should mention that, since the majority of my fan base is from fanfiction.net and a few of them follow me here on DA. I used to ghostwrite and even wrote my own novel, but there’s more money in helping other people with their books so I use fanfiction.net to let loose my creativity without worrying about the business end of it. It’s weird trying to turn a passion into a job, though you likely know all about that since you sell plushies as well as make them

GemlettuceCreations In reply to MadnessJones [2019-04-20 19:03:17 +0000 UTC]

A lottttttt of people wrote fanfiction back in the day xD they just don't like to admit it
It can be quite tough too because the moment you tell yourself it's a job you can lose interest and motivation, I sort of have no choice but to make this a full time thing because I suffer from severe anxiety and I cannot stand working for someone else, luckily my boyfriend is super supportive and said to go for it!

MadnessJones In reply to GemlettuceCreations [2019-04-20 20:19:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I’m not the most...employable type either, mostly due to anxiety and minor physical limitations. I recently got an offer for a job that pays better than what I do now, so I did what any normal person would do and went into an existential depression for a couple days. I’ve since figured out a way to not make the new job seem overwhelming, and hopefully my new boss is okay with the idea. He’s a pretty reasonable guy usually so fingers crossed

Also, what franchises did you write fan fiction for?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GemlettuceCreations In reply to MadnessJones [2019-04-21 06:51:59 +0000 UTC]

It's scary how common anxiety is these days, but here in the UK mental health isn't really taken seriously I was told not to mention my anxiety in job interviews because it would reduce my chances of getting the position...
Awwwh as long as you know you can do it I'd say go for it, I've accepted jobs I knew I'd struggle at and left within a few weeks to a month because the pressure became unbearable!

I wrote for Pokémon mostly    more mature versions and occasionally shipping fics though I did say I was barely a teen xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadnessJones In reply to GemlettuceCreations [2019-04-21 08:04:00 +0000 UTC]

I’ll just have to see how the interview process goes. I haven’t even asked about money yet, since offering more money can’t actually make me try harder. I give the same attention to detail whether it’s working for peanuts or a paypal balance. Thanks for your words of encouragement though. Sometimes when someone else says something isn’t that stressful it makes it actually feel less stressful 😊

My fanfictions are mostly but not exclusively in Transformers. I’ll write about any subject or idea that pops into my head, from the horrors of war to family relationships to filling a plot hole. I’m not embarrassed though, because writing fanfiction keeps my writing sharp and helps me improve. Besides, I’ve written original stories no one cared about even though I made a little money, but with a fanfiction I can use familiar characters to explore an emotionally deep idea and touch the lives of a hundred teenagers and young adults that read it. Admittedly though, I am embarrassed by the days when I liked Pokémon. I was a preteen and was WAY too into it

Well don't go for a job purely for the money,  they'll expect more of you the more you make..learnt that the hard way and  basically had to do 5 other peoples jobs, I was loaded but dead :c   Yeah sometimes the stress is all in our heads so going in thinking it's alright afterall might lead you to believe that

Oh interesting I never got into that franchise, Pokemon sort of enveloped me as a kid/teen/late teen. >.>   That's pretty awesome though, I've wanted to get into world building for years if I'm honest it just sounds so fun!

MadnessJones In reply to GemlettuceCreations [2019-04-22 11:08:27 +0000 UTC]

That’s good advice. And true. I work harder if I care about a project whether I’m getting paid or not (usually not). I can work just for money, but I’m usually miserable when I do. Some people can be motivated by money and that’s fine, but that’s just not me. Also, it sounds like your 6 jobs were a nightmare

I love world building! It’s probably my second favorite part about writing, number 1 being developing character personalities and psychology. My novel wasn’t perfect, but one thing I’m still happy with was how detailed the world building was. I’m working on my second novel, but it’s so hard to find time with other jobs, projects, and just life getting in the way

Why do you think I'm selling my plushies full time I make absolute pennies off it right now but I'm way happier than I would've been in a job I hate working for people I hate xD  Yeah it wasn't a fun time, I ended up in hospital due to being overworked with stress and depression so promptly left that position...

I don't have the best imagination I'd love to make a map but I'm crap with geography and I know my world wouldnt make much sense but it sounds like such a pay off after a few years of building! Life has a habit of doing that

MadnessJones In reply to GemlettuceCreations [2019-04-22 12:08:34 +0000 UTC]

It’s nice to see someone who knows to put their mental health first. I think you made the right decision. Besides, you’re making more than money, you’re making art and you’re making something that can help other people de-stress from their lives. I’m currently working on this one project for a client, and while my client is very nice and cooperative the project itself has been a huge slog to get through. Once I get paid for that one I’m definitely buying something special so I can say I got something out of it. Heck, given my mood lately I’ll probably end up buying a new cast member for my plush comics 😝

I love geography to be honest. Of course for a book world building doesn’t always mean actual maps and planets. It just means setting the scene and environment that the characters live in. It can be as small as an apartment building where the story takes place, or as big as a galaxy in the middle of an epic quest for peace. As long as you and the reader can keep everything straight that’s all that matters 😋

Thank you! If I had stayed in that job I think I would have met an early end tbh, I've seen photos of back then recently and I look very gaunt and lifeless; it's crazy what stress can do to the body!  Yeah I am and I wouldn't trade it for the world! but I do hate relying on my boyfriend to pay all the bills and things for the house he said he's completely fine with it but I don't want to be a freeloader forever!

Ah yeah I have the same issue with commissions sometimes, I'm sort of glad I hardly get them because they really take it out of me depending on what it is; I also get super nervous if it's a higher end price...
Ooooh awesome can't wait to see! I've been bingeing jw evolution so I'll probably be making more dino plushies for my shop soon... maybe some smaller raptor plushies?

Unfortunately it was never a subject that interested me in school but then we had a teacher who was very lax about the lessons and basically just taught us how to read a map and then showed us dvds for the other 4 years xD

Oooh I know but I LOOOOOOOVE World of Warcrafts lore so much and how indepth it goes! I'd kill for that imagination and creativity to devise my own solar systems

I understand the pressure to want to provide for your family. I feel that way sometimes too, but I can’t let that desire blind me to what I would risk by neglecting my health. In my case though instead of a boyfriend helping me it’s my mom. We work well together but sometimes I wish I could do more.

More raptor plushies? Yay! Those are so cute! To be fair though, I’m a sucker for dinosaurs anyway. Always have been. I’ve been working on a stegosaurus plush for a while now that’s supposed to look like the Transformer Snarl, but it’s been only half finished for forever! I sewed it with a Godzilla voice box inside so it can roar, but considering I don’t make videos I don’t know what the point of that was

Yeah, like you can count on school to teach geography. LOL! I learned it as a kid by playing Encarta Virtual Globe. It was a fun CD ROM game from 1998, or at least that’s when my brother gave it to me (lord, I sound so old). I did actually make a map for a novel I was in the process of writing years ago, but then I discarded the project and the map was never used. Probably for the best since my hand writing is nearly illegible.

I agree that video games can oftentimes have a lot of detailed maps and world building. I tried to learn video game coding a few years ago, but the farthest I got was building one maze level with a pink blob for a protagonist that you could walk around the maze. Not exactly a game, and I lost interest after a few months of not being able to work with it

Yes! I started designing one last night and I miiiiiight be working on an embroidery patterned raptor plush >.> they'll only be small but they'll be a lot more detailed! Oh Im the same I LOVE dinosaurs so much <3
I had to google what it looked like but it looks pretty awesome, if you need any tips I'm sure I can spare a few plushmaker secrets   ehhh the voice box just makes it fun for you!

English high schools are awful tbh, in history we barely learned anything except for Rosa Parks and WW2? anything else you'd have to ask about in your spare time; luckily I was quite the history buff so I'd constantly ask for random facts in chilled lessons. Ohhhh I've heard of that, you're not that old!

Hahaha yeahh my boyfriend is a hobbyist game developer who specializes in pixel art platformer type games and a few years into our relationship I attempted to learn how to code and it was awful and I gave up after he told me you have to be pretty good with maths...

Aww, tiny dinosaurs! Now I want one! Maybe when I get some extra money I can order from you again. After all, the camera loves Megatron

I don’t even know what to ask, but if you wanna talk about plush making I’m always up for learning new things. It’s a relaxing hobby, though I’ll admit I’m not necessarily good at it yet. Huffer turned out okay, and I’ve done a few tiny plushies I haven’t posted online yet, but poor Snarl so far looks like a fish

I love history too, though I go through phases as to which time periods and countries I want to learn about. Last week I was into old Hollywood, a few weeks before that I was really into the history of the British monarchy, and before that it was the indigenous peoples that were wiped out by Christopher Columbus. When I was a kid I was more into the bad boy parts of history. Gangsters, Vikings, pirates, etc. One thing that helped my love of history is that I went from public school to being homeschooled, and my mom is really into history. Unfortunately I never picked up her love of math

So sorry I've not been on dA in a few days! Awwh that's so sweet of you, I'm working on more dino plushies  right now, my tiny raptor sort of failed because I wanted him done in the embroidery hoop so they'll just be keyrings

It honestly depends what you know already xD I'm very much still a beginner, I'll be kind and call myself advanced beginner its just trial and error I'm afraid! Oohhh I didn't know you made him he looks great, hahaha my current dino looked like a manatee before I added the legs; it'll come together in the end trust me!

That's very cool, I prefer ancient history if I'm honest and I love reading about medieval history and lifestyle; it truly was another world back then!  Oh I loved vikings as a kid, and ancient egypt

That sounds adorable. I've never made a plushie keychain before, but it's something I want to try. Also, thank you for your kind words regarding Huffer. I only made him because no one else has ever made a plush of that particular character. To describe his cartoon self, Huffer is basically the Transformers version of Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh. I hope your plushie keychains sell well

I felt inspired yesterday so I worked some more on Snarl. I still need to attach the legs, but he's almost done. Yay! My stitching has definitely improved with practice, but of course the plush also has my earlier crummy stitching too. Hopefully the camera won't notice

I like medieval history and Egyptology as well. It's surprisingly difficult to find references for medieval clothes worn by common people since only the rich could afford to have their portraits painted. We know generally what they wore, but it would be hard to recreate accurately in this day and age.

Oh thats one of my least favourite bits, I spent about two hours messing up leg placement on todays plush xD it was awful! You'll have to upload him on to dA!

Ahhh that's a really good point that I never thought about before, I also know that a lot of the rich were fat because they could afford cakes and good quality meat

MadnessJones In reply to GemlettuceCreations [2019-04-26 20:32:35 +0000 UTC]

Truth be told I prefer to make plushies as small as possible. I've made three plushies from a line I'm going to call Recycloids (because they're made from repurposed fabric), and each one is only about an inch tall. I forget what that comes out to be in centimeters, but they're about the size of a grape. Cute little guys so far. One is a kitty, one is a zombie fighter thing, and one is a frog. I've made five, but I gave two away. I'll post them online once I've made a few more since I intend to sell them on Etsy. Any advice on that end would be helpful

You know how to use an embroidery machine? Man, you are talented! I've always admired good embroidery work on a plush. My embroidery skills are rudimentary at best, but I can at least make eyes, so that's something

Oh don't worry, once Snarl is done he's joining my cast, so you'll get to see him on DA with the others

Indeed they did. Some of the sugar treats they came up with in the Tudor era would make even today's consumer look at them and go "Yeah, you're overdoing it". LOL! XD

GemlettuceCreations In reply to MadnessJones [2019-04-26 20:47:47 +0000 UTC]

Blimey I'd rage making something so small   I just don't have the patience for it! They sound awesome though   errr selling on etsy? just make sure your photos are clear, your tags are relevant and stay away from copyright tags and titles (speaking from experience)   Etsy also takes 5% from your sale, 5% from shipping and a 3.5% transaction fee and then you're charged a listing fee and VAT stuff so make sure you make some money after etsy take their share xD

I have one but I don't know how to use it yet  it's soooooooo complicated but I have a very patient friend walking me through everything, I saved up for two years for this damned machine and I'm terrified of it

Ahh good! I'm looking forward to seeing him

Oh god don't, I have a really bad sweet tooth if I were in the Tudor Age I'd be 50 feet wide.

MadnessJones In reply to GemlettuceCreations [2019-04-26 21:45:37 +0000 UTC]

Actually I find making Recycloids to be a good way to relieve stress. My pattern is just a toilet paper roll so it’s not too complicated. Each one comes out a different shape though after stuffing, and the ears are a bit of a pain on the animal themed ones. It was a good excuse to practice the ladder stitch though

Wow, I didn’t realize Etsy had so many fees. I just thought it was the 3.5% transaction fee. I mean, they already charge $0.20 to list with them for crying out loud! Maybe I should just use eBay. I’ve figured out total fees with eBay and PayPal come out to a little over 12%. Plus I have really good feedback with them already.

Oi, I know how that feels; to buy something expensive and then be too afraid or uninformed to use it. Last summer I bought a Yamaha keyboard I found cheap at a yard sale, but I still don’t know how to play. I’m too stubborn to quit and sell it, but there isn’t enough time in the day to learn how to play it

Yep. The Tudors had a dessert that looked like a chestnut, but it was made entirely out of refined sugar. My teeth cringe at the thought

I'm very curious to see these little guys now

Yeahhh they changed them last June; fun fact every non U.S seller has been getting overcharged/double charged on some fees and we've been promised since december that we'll be getting refunded. Finally got my email a few weeks ago to say I'll be refunded TWO POUNDS in JUNE now by my calculations they're missing a 0 or two there, so if you do go with Etsy beware they can be very very shady.   I basically only use them because I have no other choice.

Awwwh no, maybe ask around for lessons? or youtube! (I tried youtube for embroidery machine tutorials and they're all potato quality xD ) I did the exact same when I was about 12, I desperately wanted an electric guitar, mum bought me one and it never got touched. Yeha being an adult sucks, as a kid you have all the time and no responsibility and now we have too many responsibilities and no time xD

Oh god that doesn't surprise me! Tbh their dental hygiene was the worst. ew I actually just googled about tudor hygiene and apparently they would use an ear scooper, tweezer combination to clean ears, pick their teeth and clip nails

Eventually I will showcase them, but I don’t know the perfect way to do it yet. I might even write a booklet on how to care for a Recycloid. Kind of a humorous instruction booklet in the same manner as the Pet Rock book 😝

I’m not really sure how selling with Etsy would work out for me, since I’m a US seller. Still torn between trying Etsy or going with eBay

Yep, electric guitar was another one for me. I bought one along with an amp when I was 23. I was so sure I was going to learn it, and since my dad plays guitar he was so excited for me to learn. As it turns out though, a guitar works on different principles from a piano or woodwind, and my wimpy fingers didn’t work well with the strings. I ended up selling the guitar at a consignment shop for less than I paid for it

Ohh that sounds cute!

Well you could always do both, with etsy you're more likely to be found because it specializes in handmade stock, ebay you're in competition with thouuuuuuusands of chinese sellers selling things for pennies

Awwwh no! I have tiny baby hands so thats why I couldn't learn either xD my fingers refused to move when an ex was attempting to teach me how to play I think my guitar went to a kid my mum knew

That’s something to think about. Maybe listing on both is the best option, as long as I keep an eye on the listings. Thanks 😊

Yep. Calloused hands play the guitar better. That wasn’t my first dropped hobby and it won’t be my last. My family has musical talent on both sides, yet for some reason learning to play an instrument alludes me. Eh, crafting and writing are both more fun anyway 😋
