I simply adore this! The hair is really well done, the colors are very well implemented, the clothes' folds are well done. The hair style is a neat
Now onto the crits, mainly for the background. I think the shadow is a bit too much for the drawing. I'd like to suggest a glow around her or something, or perhaps a simple background of sorts instead. Then again, this is only my taste, so feel free to judge this one by yours
In all respects though, this is a very nice drawing. Well done

I agree with the background, I did like it before I had the shadow in, but I always feel like if the background is too simple I'm skimping or being lazy. Maybe I should just stick with them simpler =} I'll give it a go next time I hope!

Hmm, then I'd be gald to point out some ideas.
You can try to put the character's silhouette (be it the lineart, the same drawing but fading into the background, or even an entirely different picture) over a colored background. That seems to bring a nice touch most of the the time on character portraits and similar drawings and illustrations.
Also, you can also try to download [or make] brushes that are grunge or abstracts and form a background with them, as well as experiment [just a little bit] with filters and then start messing around with them to see if you can get something that works out. You can try to get adventurous if you try to blend them with the drawing altogether for a nice touch. [Keep a copy of the same file just in case though if you plan top do this.]
Finally, I can also teach a lil' trick for creative backgrounds if you like. Try opening a song on Windows Media Player / WinAMP, put visualizations on Full Screen and screen-cap them. Try forming a collage with them, as they make pretty nice backgrounds. You can find some examples in the Wallpaper section of my gallery. If you can mix all of these tips together, you'll most likely get the most unique kinds of backgrounds you could imagine.
I hope these tricks helps you form new type of backgrounds. Owning to your skills, I can already see great backgrounds, I thought you just might need some ideas

Dang, what are your brush settings? that is some really nice subtle edge painting you got there.

I think I used my usual brush settings but did it all by hand (without the pen tool as I normally do). It's a hard round brush with 100% opacity and 100%flow, I think it's the default one actually!
