- Immense physical strength befitting a creature of his size.

History:

On June 15th 1976, the world was introduced to The Progenitor, a hideous abomination spawned from the radioactive fallout of the Crowe Nebranium Plant in Ashdowne, PA. After rampaging through Oak Falls and devouring countless people, the mutant was finally slain. Autopsies of the creature's corpse indicated that the creature had laid eggs as recently as a few weeks prior to arriving in Oak Falls. A mission was launched to scour the ruins of Ashdowne to destroy all offspring of the creature to prevent another Oak Falls. The operation was largely a success, with all mutant infants being destroyed except for 4. With The Progenitor and a majority of her spawn dead, a lingering question remained: What or where was the creature's mate? Many theories were put forward by researchers at Black Mountain, such as The Progenitor being able to asexually reproduce. Subsequent sweeps of Ashdowne failed to locate this alleged mate of The Progenitor, and some began to doubt it even existed. However DNA tests performed on various blood and tissue samples collected from The First Born, The Mauler, and The Parasite showed that The Progenitor's DNA only accounted for 50%, with the other half coming from an unknown donor. This seemed to confirm suspicions that The Progenitor had mated with another mutant before traveling to Oak Falls where she was ultimately killed.

Two years after the Oak Falls attack, an armed unit was patrolling the south side of Ashdowne's town square for mutant activity when they were ambushed by a massive mutant resembling The Progenitor's larval stage. The operatives were unable to kill the creature with gunfire and were forced to retreat when several members became injured by the mutant. The creature pursued them for some distance before losing interest and leaving. The operatives returned to the newly established Firebase Omega where they were debriefed and a plan was set in motion to capture the mutant alive upon insistence of Black Mountain scientists. After much trial and error, the mutant was finally captured after it was knocked out by a quadruple dose of horse tranquilizer. With the mutant incapacitated, it was heavily restrained with chains and loaded onto a flatbed for transportation to Black Mountain. Once the mutant arrived, it was immediately subjected to numerous tests, including DNA samples that were taken. It was here that the scientists appeared to have found the missing link: The mutant's DNA was a perfect match to the unknown 50% that was found in the Progenitor offspring. To this end, the mutant was dubbed "The Patriarch" and was kept confined in it's own enclosure within Black Mountain. Further testing seemed to indicate that the mutant was permanently stuck in it's larval form, and likely would not progress to a new stage like The Progenitor.

In June of 1979, a massive breakthrough was achieved in understanding the mutants and how they come to be. This discovery was made after comparing the DNA structure of The Patriarch and several other mutants, wherein it was discovered that all the creatures had a specific gene that was not present in other, non-mutated members of the same species. It was deduced that Nebranium's unique radiation signature interacted with this gene to spawn mutations. This would explain why some individuals of a species become monsters after prolonged Nebranium exposure whereas others simply die. It was also discovered that the unique retrovirus carried by The Flesh Shaper also contained this gene, likely inherited from the creature itself. When introduced into an organism that lacks it, the virus injects this gene into the host body and it's radioactive nature induces the mutation. Additionally, the researchers believed that they could modify this virus to target any mutant with the "Belua Gene" and kill it. This would result in an immensely powerful weapon to use against the rising tide of Nebranium-spawned mutants as well as those created by The Flesh Shaper.

Work was immediately started on developing this virus, with The Patriarch to be used as a test subject. By July 1st of 1979, a prototype of the virus was ready for testing, and was loaded into a dart that would be fired at The Patriarch from a safe distance. The Patriarch was moved to a larger test area where the operation would begin immediately. The Patriarch became increasingly agitated from the high level of activity around it, and made numerous attempts to attack the observation room the researchers were watching from. With the situation escallating, the virus-loaded dart was fired into the mutant's neck and the researchers held their breath as they awaited to see what happened. The effects were immediate, the creature became very weak and began foaming at the mouth. Unable to stand any longer, The Patriarch collapsed to the ground and began violently convulsing. In the observation room, the creature's vitals began to drop to dangerously low levels before finally, it's vitals flatlined completely. The mutant lay still on the ground, foaming saliva pooling around it's mouth. The virus appeared to have had the desired effects and killed the mutant, and an air of relief filled the room.

However before congratulations could be given, the mutant's vitals suddenly spiked back to life unexpectedly. The creature's brain activity, heart rate and blood pressure went through the roof as it's body began to convulse once again, muscle and veins visibly slithering underneath it's bubbling skin...
