Master Zenji's sword school is located in a small village a short distance from the capital city of Edo. The school complex is made up of old buildings, and the grounds are haunted by a ghost. The spirit's name is Mari, and in life she was a high-class courtesan in the city.

She had fallen deeply in love with a man, a poor but handsome yakuza-type, and planned to run away with him. She escaped from the city, and waited for the man in the small village as they had agreed. Unfortunately, the man never came. Overcome with despair, she threw herself into a deep well.

After death, she returned as a vengeful ghost to destroy the man who had betrayed her. She found that her very touch sapped the strength of the living, and allowed their memories to intermingle with her own. She tormented the people of the village until the day Master Zenji came. With powerful magic and gentle words, he convinced her to cease her meaningless attempt at revenge, and invited her to join his school. Now she uses her ghostly powers for good, though she maintains a healthy distrust of men.
