Description Entry for =jocarra 's Summer art contest "What's your idea of a perfect vacation?".

Since I love being out in nature, I couldn't think of any better way to spend a vacation than in a natural setting. There's something unique about being surrounded by trees, rocks, life, and natural processes β€” it's often a very relaxing and comforting sensation for me, as if I were being reminded to trust that everything will be alright. When I immerse myself in nature's arms, I feel more connected everything, and it's quite a healing experience. Thus, I'd love to spend a vacation at a beautiful location like this : )

Stock used for painting the woman: [link] by *chamberstock .

Close-ups at 100% resolution. Warning, big file: [link]

This is inspired from both Tolkein's Rivendell and a summer camp I've enjoyed visiting since childhood and have worked at for several years β€” a family camp located in the mountainous terrain near Yosemite with a river running through it and has food and lodging provided. (No horseback riding though )

Many thanks to ~Verwildert for helping me with advice and critiques, and referring me to a landscape brush set.

This took a really, really long time for me to paint (over 70 hours?) and I'm still not quite satisfied with it. Don't get me wrong, I like how it looks, but I'm feeling a bit frustrated at myself because of the [Time & Effort]:[Quality] ratio. I spent a lot of time time filling in a lot of details on a huge canvas and probably added so much to the point that it was unnecessary. (I painted several bees in the foreground, but you can barely see them at the painting's reduced resolution). So, it was a problem with my planning/composition. Also, I'm not that pleased with the figure (as always).

[9.19.2009]: This placed 1st! Thanks to everyone for all the support!

so beautiful, especially the details on the landscape, but makes me wish the figures had the same.

The horse, I think, has too low of a chest, the eyes are too small and need to be more on the sides of the face, and the reins on a bridle connect to a bit in the horse's mouth, not the on the side of the face.

I still can't get over the water and the grass textures. awesome.

Thanks for the nice comments and critique!

I'll definitely use your observations if I go back and work on this or draw horses in the future. This was the second horse I ever tried to draw in detail - the first one being drawn 7 years ago - so I was certain I made mistakes. So, I appreciate you pointing out what you noticed.

I take it you're around horses or study them a lot? They're such beautiful animals.

GenjiLim In reply to titta [2010-01-18 05:16:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, titta! If I remember it correctly, the prize was a 600x600 px digital piece by Jocarra. I "donated" it though, since I knew she had a lot on her plate at the time, and I mostly participated in the contest for the inspiration and exposure.

It's nice to hear from you. How've you been?

Too much work and too little time to do my own projects unfortunately . When I did have all the time in my hands, I just wasnΒ΄t inspired to do anything. But I guess that is the way it goes...

This landscape is gorgeous! The details you have are just enough and just right...it looks flawless. However, the anatomy of the horse is not quite right. It looks awkward in contrast to the excellent quality of the landscape and human.

GenjiLim In reply to Koffee-Krazy [2009-09-19 21:57:08 +0000 UTC]

Yes, thanks for pointing out the horse. I realize I need to go back and touch it up. It's basically the first horse I've attempted to paint, and I didn't have an exact reference to go off of T_T

But thanks so much for your positive feedback and critique! : D
