8"x10" acrylic on masonite primed with gesso.This one didn't take as long as the hyena, (by like, a half hour, LOL) but it was no less a pain in the ass. I was freaked because I had no idea how i was going to create depth and shadow from a anime-d portrait. I started dark to light; the base color was a thin wash of retarder and a mixed color. Once I got my desired dark color, I just kept adding thin layers of lighter shades to slowly build a more three dimensional feel to it (I didn't want it entirely cartoonish and flat)
Retarder became my best friend after this project and if I have to use acrylic again, I'm totally using it again. That was my biggest deal with acrylics; it dries before I have any time tod anything with it, lol! This gave me a few extra minutes to get something mixed and I play with blending.
To keep the illustration unified I kept the BG the same and kept the attire sort of minimal to play with the hyenas pattern on his coat.

Oh god no! I meant to say that I finished this a half hour earlier than the hyena...Yeah no, those took me almost 4 days straight to do!! I WISH I was that quick!

I didn't think it would come out like this at all though. I'm surprised anyone got anything in on time considering how short our deadline was!
If you're gonna try again, take your sweet time. Work in thin layers (if you can, use retarder, it keeps the acrylic wetter a bit longer and gives you more time to play with it) you did great with your wood pieces, continue to experiment. Next time for the wood try seeing if you can't treat it with something first or, make that bleeding effect work for you. There are alot of neat little details you can bring out with that bleed.
