I would absolutely love to use this as a reference picture for a drawing sometime, if that's alright with you. The shot's just so perfect for a nice drawing, with just the right amount of attitude.

Just answering Mightysquirrel - Chains are called shanks, or chain shanks (as we call them) they help control a horse, mainly colts, since they weigh A LOT more than a person and can drag you off LoL... but it's just for stronger control, doesn't hurt them much. There are bits called 'chiffneys' (sp?) that slide into their mouth for control as well. ^.^

Nice shot of the colt! They can be clowns LoL

I never slip under the lip on the gums unless absolutely necessary but to keep their attention only, I won't slip a chain or rope over the nose, for it can damage their nose if pulled or caught hard. The mouth is a bit better for control, plus you can pull them a bit better with mouth control.

Well, we use these on hard to handle horses, but we just thread them through the halter... over the nose. Never up under the lip. Ouch! And never anything attached to the bit. I've also seen (or what looks like) race horses where they like put some fabric in their mouth and tie their tongue down or something. At least, that's what I assume the point is. It all seems rather strange...
