"Grendel, I come for you!" Beowulf is one of my favorite Anglo-Saxon heroes, battling monsters such as Grendel and the dragon.

Beowulf, greatest of norse/germanic heroes next to Sigurd the Volsung. Glad to finally see someone depict him with black hair, seems like everyone screws that detail up that he was the only man among his crew with black hair

they actually honored Volsung in Skyrim by naming a Dragon Priest after him

Very cool. I enjoyed reading Beowulf for junior English; everyone else wasn't as entertained, sadly.

Definitely beats the CGI film version of Beowulf. Movie was okay, loosely followed the poem but still good...

Yes. The dragon was more or less eternity, and no man, no matter how bad ass, can truly fight man's fate of death. He was old, and still so foolishly proud to go out and fight the dragon...

I have nothing against artistic license, but I do have something against historical inaccuracy. And whilst it may be true that it is fantasy, it also takes place in an actual historical historical period, and an actual historical place, people who, for the most part, were created to reflect people and life at the time it was written (somewhere around the 6th to 9th century). And your comment about what I said about the armor seems to go against every bit of historical evidence we have. True, there are many different armor, but plate armor wasn't even in use at that time, and even if it was, the Vikings wouldn't be wearing it. The oddest thing about all this has to be the fact that the illustrator seems to be taking this better than you are.

One more thing:

10. Grendel wasn't a demon.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tricrax In reply to TheAlmightyTim [2007-12-06 00:26:12 +0000 UTC]

Demon is also a commonly used umbrella term for mythological creatures, typically synonymous with monster. There have been some texts in which Djinn, Imps, and Ifrits were referred to as demons.

Grendel, being even more malevolent and monstrous than those three creatures, could easily be considered a demon.

Also, I do know the traditional meaning of a demon, being one of the Nephilim, but I also know that demons have come to be used to describe monsters of any type in literature.

Where to start...

1. That's not Beowulf.

2. Beowulf had a beard.

3. Beowulf was a viking, therefore had little, if any armor, and that would be chain mail.

4. That sword is too big.

5. The sword's blade is far too wide. The tang would snap under it's weight.

6. the sword's pommel is too small.

7. In the epic poem, it took four men to carry Grendel's head, so large and heavy as it was.

8. Beowulf is not a Saxon poem, it is an Anglo-Saxon poem.

9. Beowulf was a Geat, at that time, meaning he was a Norseman. No Viking ever dressed like that. They were far too poor.

Spend a few years studying Nordic history and try again.
