You got an EP1?!
What was this about getting all the juices squeezed out of you by Grad school again?

didn't want to carry a huge camera with me everyday. Size was everything. It was either that or a G10. I enjoy testing new technology.

Yeah I know what you mean. Though having spent the majority of my time with a tiny P&S, I'm not really going to complain about the SLR for another little while. I was pretty excited when they first announced the EP1. How do you like it?

Its a good daily camera, but dont expect to do something really crazy with it. Its not as small as it seems, but it fits in my backpack without any hassle. I had to buy a new backpack because it rains a lot in the East coast!
I'm big into fast manual controls and bracketing. Neither is kinda of there, so its a bit disappointing for me. Manual Focus really sux. The Af is really slow but other than that. I rank it a bit higher up than my D80. But I am looking forward in getting a ultra wide for this camera when it comes out.

I'd expect the ease of controls would be have to be sacrificed for the smaller size. It sucks that trying to get a focus is hard though. That would mean it has the same problem as any point and shoot with manual functions. It being better than your D80 is pretty good though. I hope I'll be able to afford one when they come up with an upgrade that fixes these glitches.
A new backpack? Whatever happened to the idea of just getting an umbrella?

Controls are harder than the d80 but he iso performance is much better. did I mention HD Video. a 40 second clip is 300 megs.
a new backpack because i dont want my laptop drenched in water? I ended up getting one that's water proof for one compartment.

Mhm... given the D80's a lot older.
Actually, I didn't know they made backpacks that can completely waterproof. Though I suppose I never looked into it since umbrellas were sufficient most of the time =/

Boston rains 4/7 days a week!!! I bought this because i needed a lot of pockets for all the architecture tools I carry (i.e. scales, drafting pens, sketchbooks). [link]
pricy.
but I also saw this one. [link]
These backpacks are made to site in the rain without letting water into your cargo. the cheaper one can even be thrown into a pool and it would be ok, as long as its not submerged.

Goodness, that's going to be something to adjust to!
You're right though, with pens and sketchbooks, it'd be bad if stuff got wet.
I forgot that hikers need this kind of stuff to keep their stuff dry. I've dealt with soaking feet and rain jackets all my life. =/

I go hiking a fair amount. I always bring a water resistant jacket with me. i went on a hike in yosemite at night got to this waterfall area (it was windy and pitch black) everyone was soaked except me because i was all wrapped up in my thin jacket. water resistance is a a life saver

I do too, when I have the time to...
I don't really bother bringing anything with me unless I strongly suspect bad weather though. Where I go, the water tends to stay on the ground. Otherwise, the trees actually block out all the rain. Not to mention, it's about 2 minutes from where I used to live in dorm.

btw kens is really big on Nikon, therefore when he talks about nikon stuff, he makes it better than life. Canon actually isn't all that bad, nor is all the other brands. Nikon lacks good modern pro lens

I've noticed...
It really is hard to choose between Canon and Nikon. Overall, they pretty much balance each other out in terms of quality. Really, I would have chosen to shoot Canon if it weren't for it's chunkiness/uncomfortable grip and controls. The Canon lens system is much more simple, it seems pretty easy to find good deals on them. Though from what I read, with adapters some Canon lenses work well on Nikons too, so I don't really know.
Working with a budget really makes things difficult. =/

geolio In reply to reicirith [2009-08-18 08:00:40 +0000 UTC]
Its the other way around, Nikon lens work on Canons. Its because Canon's attachment rings are bigger and the distance between lens and sensor are further than nikons. Nikon can't use Canon lens because they would not be able to fit.
I dont like the wheel because I can't one hand the SLR when using the wheel, where as teh dual dials nikon have really speed things up. D40 and D60s have 1 wheel and that pisses me off. Nikon's Dual wheel makes exposure compensation and aperture very easy

reicirith In reply to geolio [2009-08-26 17:00:37 +0000 UTC]
Really? From what I heard, it's true both ways.
Well I wouldn't usually try to to one hand an SLR, but it'd definitely be easier to do it with a Nikon. Older Canon SLRs had another wheel in the back of the camera. I really wish they stuck with that.

the 40d, 50d, 5d and 1d all have that 2nd wheel but the rebel does not... sometimes u can't say when you have to one hand it.

It's been busy has hell. Studying on top of trying to pack in a bunch of fun things to do. I've taken a bunch of photos, but it's going to take a while before I can get them up. My camera is out for a clean up, and my backup camera's lens was lent out to someone. So no pictures for a little while. Still looking into that dSLR. I'll likely end up snapping up a D60 at the last minute.
How have you been? I take it you've been traveling?

geolio In reply to reicirith [2009-08-13 20:46:30 +0000 UTC]
done traveling, im moving soon.
I think u should read up on the type of lens the D60 uses. They aren't compatible with all lens (i.e. 50mm F1.8). I almost recommend getting a d200. Though older, its about the same price. But the best thing about it is that i has a lot of features that even the d60 does not have. That way, you cna explore what a profession camera has to offer until you have a job and get a super camera. Not that a D60 is bad. But you'll outgrow it really fast. As I've seen in many cases.

Hah!
No more sunny warm-ish weather all year round huh?
I've checked out the lenses. At this point I'm not too worried about the lenses since it's not like I can afford them anyway.
Though you're right. I checked out the D200, and it sounds like a great deal and a much better choice. The only problem is finding one.

I'm flying over in 1 week so im still packing. The D200 shows up once in a while for a great deal. I dont know how the Canadian Market is like, but I order everything from New York. Different states is tax free, apparently. The ability to use lots of older lens is really good because you can play with manual lens that you get from garage sales or flea markets for under 100.

You're right about the older lenses bit.
The problem with ordering from the states too is shipping often costs a whole lot more. I'll keep an eye out. But at this rate, I might as well wait for my sister to give up her Rebel (which has barely been touched), and work with that until I find something good.

rebels are really nice. I think i would have gotten one had i dislike canon grips adn dial placements. The grip is too small and teh thumb wheel is not too comfortable to use.

Well if you want it small, you're going to have to trade comfort and ease of use for it.
Fair trade if you ask me.
