Five years ago today, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" premiered on The Hub (now Discovery Family) as a reboot of Hasbro's beloved toy brand under the supervision of animation veteran Lauren Faust. To everypony's shock and surprise, even Hasbro's, it became a breakout hit and cultural phenomenon. It shattered all stereotypes of what a little girls' cartoon show shoud be like with its strong storylines, wacky off-the-wall humor, catchy songs and solid educational themes woven into each episode.
I am old enough to remember when "The Smurfs" was making TV history back in the 80's as a pop favorite and an animation game-changer, and I believe MLP is on that same history-making level and beyond. It's now earned its place in cartoon history alongside The Flintstones, Scooby Doo, Rugrats and Spongebob Squarepants as beloved icons that span the generations.
Great job on this anniversary cartoon! Expect it to go viral!
