Description On dA I noticed that photographers that buy a new camera use the last shot whit the old one to capture the new one, I like to see it as some sort of charm or superstition, so here is my new camera.

It's a Sony alpha 100 Body, the lens (Minolta AF 70-210) isn't new actually, but comes from my analog Minolta Dynax 7000.

So this is it, the last (chronological) picture I took whit the Olympus C-2100 UZ, let's hope that this littel superstition brings me luck

Oh,yes I am. I've got 2 minolta objectives which used to belong to my grandpa, but then somehow they ended up at my place just when I was about to buy Nikon, but the guy who sales dslrs told me that minolta fits on Sony, because they're both Japan. cool, isn't it?

I have a Minolta 7000, and I have that beercan too

Infact I'm looking for a Sony alpha, to re-use my lens

Thank you, glad you like the picture.

Reusing my beercan lens and other minolta lenses is exactly why I bought my Alpha

Fedp In reply to Gerend [2009-04-21 17:52:07 +0000 UTC]

That's a good news, now I'm saving money to buy one.
Besides the beercan I have a 28mm and a 50mm. Does the lens give any problem? I.E. autofocusing, metering, managing the focal, FFD?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Gerend In reply to Fedp [2009-04-22 18:32:34 +0000 UTC]

I'd love to have a prime 28mm with some nice f values hehe, but keep in minde that the focal lengt gets multiplied by 1,5 so the 28 will be a 42, the 50 a 75 and the beercan becomes a 105-315.

I have no problems at all wiht the compatibiliy between the Alpha 100 and the beercan, sometime it has some little problems to focus but that's just the same normal problems it had with the 7000. My lense is pretty lound when focussing, but that is due to the fact that it simply is an old tough metal lens and not some cheapo plastic.

I heard some people get purple fringes when the sun shines just the right way, but I never had that problem, I suppose that's just because she was taking pictures with the sun shining right into the lense.

There is one compatibility problem, not with lenses, but with the Flash, old minolta flashes won't work unless they are of the D variant. The D variant flashes where sold with and for the Minolta 7d and 5d digital cameras (and since the sony alpha 100 is actually a clone of the d7 it works with them).

I look forward to see your pics done with the Alpha.

you have the beercan. I have that lens too. It's very nice, but it does have a lot of problems with flare and weird purple fringing.

Gerend In reply to born-palace [2008-05-15 18:08:33 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe yeah the beer can or how it's called in german the oven pipe (Ofen Rohr). Till now I've had no problem with flare or purple fringing, ever tried to clean it or bring it to a professional revision?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

born-palace In reply to Gerend [2008-05-15 20:40:30 +0000 UTC]

I bought it from a camera shop that is very picky about what they buy used. They said that it was a common problem with this lens. With the lens hood on, flare isn't as bad.

great photograph of this!
so, every old minolta lens is running on the alpha series? that would be cool coz i already have some from an analog minolta.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Gerend In reply to agerpic [2008-02-09 01:24:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, am glad you like it

Yes all the Minolta AF series of lenses work on the Sony Alpha's, while the Minolta MD (those are the even older ones with no autofocus) do not work, they have an other attachment. I actually bought an Alpha for me for your same reason, because I have a Minolta system and I didn't want to buy again all the lenses I already had. There is one thing that dosn't work from the old Minoltas, and that's the Flash, Sony changed the system, no idea why, but if you fit an older Flash on the Alpha it just flashes at the maximum intensity it can, and then you have to maually find the right exposure and aperture (basically the Flash and the Body do not communicate together).

Since Sony now produces also the Alpha 200 and the Alpha 700 maybe you can already find cheaper Alpha 100 around.

yes i actually tried that yesterday in a shop. i think i'll buy an alpha 100. nice quality and one of the cheapest at the moment.

Looks great with that lens.
So how is the camera so far? I still can't get a hold of all the functions in mine. I'm new to photography.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Gerend In reply to PORSCHER [2007-11-24 10:22:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks

Well I'm pretty happy with it till now, and yeha it has many functions hehe. I still don't know them all too (and some I know I don't use) but I think the easyest way is to simply "play around" with your camera, that's how I do it (and I get some tips from my friend ) I'm overall happy with the Sony (also if there is a loss in quality at 1600 iso), mostly also because I can buy the Minolta Objectives that do not cost much anymore since everyody is selling them

Hope you'll have fun with your new a-100

aimeelikestotakepics In reply to Gerend [2007-12-01 04:08:55 +0000 UTC]

ahh the noise on the alpha is so bad, I always set it to 100-200 ISO because even at 400 it can get hella grainy. blegh.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Gerend In reply to aimeelikestotakepics [2007-12-01 08:00:08 +0000 UTC]

Well till 800 iso the noise is actaully similar to the noise of a Canon 400 or a Nikon d70, while at 1600 you have a drop that's true, I rarely use over 400 anyway. But the problem in my opinion lies also in the fact that the standard lense isn't so light intensive, that's why I bought myself also a f2.8 lense to get more light and so less iso's, if you do a lot of dark shots I suggest that you maybe think about buying one too (you can find suggestions in the comment before your one^^)

For the bodycover.... Well I thought every alpha had one, or maybe I'm only lucky

aimeelikestotakepics In reply to Gerend [2007-12-01 17:45:31 +0000 UTC]

LOL I have one I just meant it doesn't have the cool alpha symbol on it But yea, I really wish I had some lenses with wider apertures, but most of the time I don't shoot in low light so it's not that big of a deal. I'll probably upgrade in another year or two :]

PORSCHER In reply to Gerend [2007-11-24 13:39:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I heard there are lots and lots of great Minolta lenses. I have the SAL18200, it is amazing but it's giving me a hard time with close shots so I was wondering what could be the best current lens that has great depth of field, do you happen to have an idea about it?

& thanks for the info. Your friend has an amazing gallery that have boosted my confidence in my Alpha.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Gerend In reply to PORSCHER [2007-11-24 16:09:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, from sony I have only the original 18-70 lens, it's actually oky for easy use but don't expec anything special from it, it's basically standard (I'm sure you noticed the slight play the focus and the zoom fo the lens has, and afterall it's just plastic).

Sony has started a fantastic collaboration with Carl Zeiss, from Germany, they make incredible lenses for Telescopes and Microscopes and now extra for the Alpha. Those Zeiss lenses are incredible, but also their price is pretty high (also if they are fully worth the money), so since I'm a studend and got a little budget I actually bought myself a Sigma 90 Macro lense and still use the other older Minolta lenses. The quality of the old (also second hands) Minolta or Sigma lenses is better (in my opinion) than the standard Sony one (Minolta lenses mostly have a though metal body), and (at least here in europe) you can find cheep and well kept second hand models in the various photography shops or even ebay.

But since you'r actually asking me for the best actual (new) lense with great DoF I'd say the SAL-1680Z - Carl Zeissยฎ Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Zoom Lens, but if you want a Macro lens for macrophotography I suggest a SIGMA 105mm F2,8 EX DG MAKRO ([link] ), not only is it a good macro lens but it's also a really good for portraits, but it's a fixed not a zoom lense.

Hope this helped you some

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PORSCHER In reply to Gerend [2007-11-24 19:15:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Carl Zeiss lenses are way off my budget though if I could get my hands on one I'd go directly for the one you recommended.

Thank you so much for the heap info.
