I'm a fan of all members of the Alcidae, so Puffins surely fit in

Yep, they were The entire island is a nature reserve with strict policies about wandering about on the paths, so these birds really aren't scared of humans, sometimes even wiggling between your legs and stuff like that. Quite an encounter !

That is SO awesome! I'd love to go to a place like that someday.

Well, if you're in the UK (Wales), SkΓΆmer is the place to go Not only for Atlantic puffins but it's also home to one thirth of the world population of Manx shearwaters along with lots of Harbour porpoises, Grey seals, ...

Awesome!!! I actually live right smack in the center of the US. The only thing we have running around in nature is squirrels and chipmunks. And the occasional cat. But I would love to go to the UK. It's on my bucket list.

I'm a Belgian, so it's closer to me (actually still some 700miles away) but it was on an ecology stage for biology students

And the US is on my bucket list for Maine, Washington and Oregon, Idaho and Yosemite/Yellowstone parks !

I've never actually been to those places. I have been to Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Florida. All beautiful places, especially since I live in plain old Iowa. Arizona was my favorite because of the mountains! So gorgeous!

Yeah, I had to chose on my list and I'm more into northern territories (visited Sweden last year, can't get it out of my mind anymore). But Arizona and Illinois are pretty cool too. Iowa would be nice to drive through I think ?

Yeah. It is quite boring living here though. I look outside and all I see is flat, flat, flat. There's like, no cool landscape, you know? Just fields. It can be pretty, but it can also get boring after a while.

I'm living in one of the most populated regions of Europe (Flanders), so I'd be happy seeing vast fields instead of houses everywhere with patches of nature between them ... but I can imagine it becoming a little boring ...

Yeah, but when you live somewhere your whole life, no matter where, I can understand someone wanting to get out and see something new, right?

Gertcars In reply to PipeDownAndListen [2012-06-24 22:49:26 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, I can imagine, got the same here I'm sorry to ask, but I don't know Iowa well : don't you have forests and rivers over there ?

PipeDownAndListen In reply to Gertcars [2012-06-24 22:51:50 +0000 UTC]

We've got a river on the border, and a few wooded areas. In my neighborhood we have a creek and a little forest, yeah. And it can be really pretty, I just uploaded a few photos from the other day. The thing with that creek is that it's man-made. It's still lovely, though.

Gertcars In reply to PipeDownAndListen [2012-06-24 22:59:12 +0000 UTC]

Almost everything here is man-made except for one forest here nearby (and still heavily, though ecologically managed) and a small piece of a natural river valley that is allowed to flood when needed. But we come a long way to try to "re-wild" our piece of land ... Sometimes nature needs us to recreate her systems So, be glad you have it !

But of course, try to get out sometime to get a new view; I did it last year : something completely different and it got me hooked !

PipeDownAndListen In reply to Gertcars [2012-06-24 23:02:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! Yesterday I decided that instead of going around the creek, I'd go through it. It was quite the adventure!

I saw the pictures, nice adventure ! Did the same in Southern France once along a rocky creek. The evening before we'd found a scorpion in another tunnel... luckily in that one there weren't any ... It's stuff like that that makes you glad about how you spent your day
