Description "Livestock", especially pigs, are intelligent, sensitive, social animals. Factory farms equal animal cruelty.

Things that are typically done to these animals in factory farms and other farms:
- Docking of tails (as you can see on the stamp), beaks, burning of horns, etc usually without anaesthesia
- Castration without anaesthesia (Yes, that's legal if done to young animals!)
- Confinement to extremely little space per animal (f.e. you can keep over 11 chickens per m² in Germany) so animals can't live out any of their natural behaviour, or even step out of each other's way to avoid conflict, which leads to agression and cannibalism; also the animals can't keep clean (Pigs have a very sensitive sense of smell and are not dirty at all if they are allowed to keep themselves clean) because there is no space for a "toilet"
- Animals are forced to live in huge groups that are too big to live out healthy social behaviour (e.g. pecking order in chickens)
- Livestock transport for days without food&water on even tinier space
- Excessive use of antibiotics and other medication
- Anaesthesia fails during slaughter due to the need to work very fast
- Basically every terrible thing one can imagine, if it brings at least a little financial profit for the animal industry (f.e. in laying hen breeding, all male chicks are killed right after hatching)

Would you allow people to do this to your pets?

Anyone who does or supports such inhumane practices should be made to go through the same disgusting things themselves! So horrible! These poor, innocent animals!

This is so utterly horrible, it's hard to believe that people actually do that. The first time I saw the pictures in that stamp, I could barely tell they were pigs. It's just so sad. I'm trying to get my parents to get chickens from a center where they rescue them (Its more than chickens so). But i'm totally using this

I read the book Fast Food Nation (I can't remember the author) and it talked about how slaughterhouse workers are knee-deep in blood, and how many buildings don't even have bathrooms and sinks in them!!!

I really /wish/ I could, but I have to eat my school lunches because my mom can't pack me luch. Are family farms any much better though?

I know this is a late comment, but hey, I figured I could answer your question. :3

As for family farms they are better, if you mean living conditions, though the animals are still killed in the same ways, and calves are taken from their mothers soon after birth so people can have the milk. Are you sure there isn't a vegetarian option at your school? (:

Which is exactly why I go for the farms that treat the animals better.
I'm omnivore, I eat meat on a daily basis, but I indeed think alot of factory farms needs improvement for the sake of the animals. I'd rather pay a little more for my meat with the knowledge of that the animals have been treated with more care.
Besides, treating the animals better will make their meat more tasty, so isen't it worth to offer more money for that, if not for the sake of the animals alone?

I do remember reading that we can't feed the planet's appetite for meat and animal products from the more humane family farm system. Some of the stuff I've read suggested it's either factory farming (which will destroy the environment) or semi-veganism (which saves resources). Yet, I haven't researched this definitively enough to give a 100% certain answer.

I do not know exactly with countries such as USA, where it might indeed be hard to maintain that much meat with more humane animal farming, but I know smaller countries might be. But even in USA and other large countries, there's many opportunities of making it more humane. Maybe not completely perfect, but even a little bit better is a big thing.
But yes, we will probably need to cut down on our using of meat, and I do not have anything against that. I think the big problem with the 'vegetarian-wave' that is happening at the momment is, that many expect humans to give up meat from one day to another, which will definately not happen. Focusing on a slower transition I think things would go much better. Because it's in no way easy to turn your whole lifestyle from one day to another.
But I haven't researched this 100% either, so I really can't say anything for certain either xD

I can't speak for all of the Veg*n wave, but most of the members seem to realize that any change will be slow, and a lot of them seem to prefer. If we call people abstaining from meat ideal, than it would be better if cutbacks happened slowly so we wouldn't be stuck with the need to cull millions of animals. A lot of people also take a long time to convert to vegan/vegetarian, or only partially convert like the "vegan before 6 diet/lifestyle."

I totally agree that there is room for improvement in factory farming practices, even though I personally don't believe in happy exploitation. Mercy For Animals and PeTA are doing a lot of protests/legal action/misc. campaigning for things like an end to gestation crates.

There Is no such thing as 'humane' meat or slaughter. But It's good to be conscious about where your meat comes from and how It's obtained.

Geekygirl43 In reply to Pagan-Chloe [2013-03-16 19:51:59 +0000 UTC]

Where'd you get that saying from PETA? I completely laugh at PETA supporters, they think they help animals but in reality they support BSL and are anti no kill. And for a little info, meat is more humane for the animals, before you ask questions look at Temple Grandin. If you were a farm animal would you rather be eaten while still alive by some wild animal, or properly stunned not feeling a thing when you're killed?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pagan-Chloe In reply to Geekygirl43 [2013-03-16 21:01:50 +0000 UTC]

I have nothing to do with Peta. Stunning is not humane. They get miss fires, they don't always get knocked out from the first time, they go into painful convultions and fits before they die. Some animals are still alive when they are ready to be cut up. Watch Earthlings. Farm practices are not as humane as you like to think.

Geekygirl43 In reply to Pagan-Chloe [2013-03-17 01:07:07 +0000 UTC]

Look at Temple Grandin, her research and her methods, that kicking you see is just nerves acting up, animal rights activist clearly aren't smart enough to look at the head, and that's only from farms that kill thousands of animals a day. Small farms that kill only a fraction of that, make sure that the animals are fully stunned. Just look at this footage right here. [link]

THEY WILL NEVER KNOW A SPRING
-----------------------------------------------
As I walked along the street today
My heart began to sing,
For I passed a mass of daffodils
And I felt the joy of Spring.

I marveled at the colours
Of the blossom everywhere,
And it filled my heart with joy
To see the trees no longer bare.

Then I thought of all the animals
And no more my heart could sing,
And I ached for all the millions
Who will never know a Spring.

I thought of pigs in factory farms
In squalid filthy pens,
And I thought of spider-ridden sheds
Stacked up with battery hens.

They'll never feel a ray of sun,
Their hearts will never sing,
Locked away from life and beauty
They will never know a Spring

If you feel bad about it, just eat less of it. Try to make vegetarian dishes more often, it's not hard The internet is full of recipes. If you don't have a ton of severe allergies, there will always be enough food to choose from, even without all animal products. We are so lucky that we're able to choose, the animals that die for our taste buds have it so much worse.

Well there certainly are farms where animals are treated better, I'd recommend visiting them to see for yourself how they keep the animals. I think it's easier to just not buy any animal products but of course everyone is different!

Yep, we have. We buy ecological meat, eggs and dairy products whenever we can (as well as organic veggies, of course). Some highly-recommended videos regarding this are "Earthlings", "Food Inc." and "Fast Food Nation", as well as Jamie Oliver's "Food Revolution" series.

THANK YOU. If people think hunting wild animals is wrong, they should think about where most of the meat on their dinner plate comes from. And though I don't support hunting when it's simply a sport, I do if it's done to get food. At least the wild animals get to die knowing what freedom, space, and life is. Factory farms take all that away from animals and are treated like mindless objects instead of living, breathing creatures. More people should stand up for animal rights instead of looking the other way and playing ignorant.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gescheitert In reply to DoubletheU [2011-02-27 15:49:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes. I wouldn't want to eat any dead animal, but I know that hunting for food is "better" than raising domestic animals. Also it would reduce the overall consumption of meat by a great deal, which would be good for our health, too.
Problem is, most people are only interested in pet animals and some cute wild animals and don't care about the others.
