Description Not truly a rat, the greatrat is a yek and is another mammal.  In order to keep their offspring safe from flying serpents, greatrats take care of them in burrows.  The adults are too large to fit, so the burrows must be deep enough that other animals can't get in, but the adults can feed them.

Males stake out a territory that is convenient for females and will fight over good territories.  They then dig burrows--several.  Their family will move several times.  If the female likes his burrows, she'll mate with him and give birth into the burrows (burrows must then be designed such that they are flat enough for the babies to crawl in, and such that they're readily birthed into.  Thankfully, their genitalia is arranged such that they can easily birth into tunnels.  It looks a lot like they're humping a hill).

Predators aren't the only danger for young greatrats--if an unrelated female finds them, she will kill them.  This could potentially free up the father for taking care of her offspring.  Males help the females raise their babies by watching over them when their mother is feeding them and digging new burrows to move them into as they get larger and as their scent gets too powerful in their original dens.  Both parents will carry the babies to the new dens.  Adults are about the size of a large dog.  Their front claws are used for fighting and for digging.  Females have smaller claws than males, but their manes are just as thick--females fight over desirable males and territory.

Please don't use without permission, yada yada.

These sound really interesting, I have a feeling if we could make animations most of it would be a Planet Earth kind of show based off all the creatures instead of characters lD

D'y'know, David Attenborough's voice has been going through my head for the last several weeks.
