Well, autechre should use photography like that on them album cover instead using QR flashcode. (if you don't know autechre, it's a two man band that do complexe electronic music. Should hear).

So the perspective here just planted into the cornea of my eye.
It jet it's place in my wallpaper folder.

I like the contrast, texture and angle. I'm not too certain about the aperture, however. It might have been better to go for more focus all the way up and crisp lines throughout. It starts to look a little hazy in the middle because of the reflective surface at F/4.0, especially right down the center.

That being said... awesome shot and I think you've got a good eye. Experiment the heck out of your shots and find what you like. I remember when I first got my camera, also a Canon and also a Rebel, I had no clue what I was doing and I still don't most of the time, but it's crazy fun and I don't know what I'd do without it.

Thank you for this reply, I too gave the aperture a second thought when I got it home on the bigger screen. I will probably go back some day and sure to take my tripod. I'm so weary of bumping my iso that I tend to keep my aperture lower, but like you mention I still have a ton of experimenting to play with!

As a general rule, I set my iso 100 and don't touch it except as a last resort. I'd rather fix issues with post processing than bump my iso and lose quality. Make sure you're shooting in RAW, because you have a lot more options after the fact that way.

With a 55mm lens, at iso 100, I'd try between F11 and F16, and 1/100+ to start, and adjust from there.

The longer you have your camera, the easier it gets to know what's going to work and what won't. You're already on the right track though; exiting auto and shooting manual is the step that starts an epic adventure.

Yeah I've been keeping my iso at 100-200 as much as possible. I made it a point to teach myself and learn manual, I've not touched auto or the semi auto modes and I have plans to do the same with my wife as I teach her. I might end up teaching her some of the semi auto modes, we'll see.

Photos of my son was my main reason for the new camera and I love blowing out the background so I have this low aperture mindset. I'll have to remember I want more in the photo with such large architecture/landscape.

I do shoot RAW, actually RAW+Jpeg. I'm very new to LR and have played with PS for years, I'm enjoying the options in LR with a RAW file.

Thanks for the feedback, I enjoy talking with other photo lovers!

From all my experimenting over the last few years, this Canon line does an admirable job in auto mode; one of the first things I did was put it in auto and shoot out of a moving car to see how smart it was. I was surprised how well it handled.

Portraits are not something I've spent a lot of effort on, nor do I know much in the way of tips/tricks. I've caught a few awesome candid shots in spite of this though.

I've had my camera for about three years now, and I'm by no means an expert or even particularly that great a photographer, but I'm more than willing to chat and share anything I've learned, so if you ever seek answers on something, feel free to ask; I'll answer any questions I can.

RAW really is fantastic, I don't even bother with +jpeg any more. Also, PS gives you the option "Open in Camera RAW" which is really great for making multiple corrected versions of your RAW files. It'll also let you correct for the specific lens you've shot with.

I'm able to correct the lens in LR, I need to upgrade to 4, I'm using 3 atm. For PS, I'm using cs5 and I'm unable to open my RAW in PS. I guess I need to dl some update or something, not too sure. I am really enjoying LR, but I should really look into how I can get my RAWs open in PS, it would be really helpful to have this option.

Thanks for the future help option. I leave the +jpeg option on there because I haven't found myself hurting for space {yet} and it's nice to also have the option of simple snapshots that I don't intend to edit, or if I let my wife or little brother play with the camera.

I'm pretty sure it's an Adobe update/add-on specifically for the Canon camera... might be on the disks that came with the camera software; It's been so long, I don't exactly recall. I'm using PS 5 as well, and I know I had 3 or 4 when I got my camera, but it definitely auto-downloads updates for RAW on my system periodically.

As for space, I bought myself an external hard drive specifically for storing photos and staying organized. (I have yet to actually be organized... lol. But if you set it up right, you can actually direct the camera to auto-download in an organized fashion and save yourself a world of pain and digging for things you know you have but can't remember where you put it - like me!)
