Description My "entry" or what not to this week's art challenge. Sorry for putting it up late, we have a new computer policy in the house, which means I can't even get on the damn thing until it's 5 PM pacific time.

Anyhow, here it is, colored. You're probably looking at this going "THIS ISN'T VERY B1ND1 AT ALL" but really, I was inspired by her work! D: I MEAN IT. STOP JUDGING ME.

ANyhow, open to critique and everything!

This is absolutely amazing. The conductor, the stars, everything. My only critique is that the lines could be a little cleaner, but that's just me. I absolutely love how you draw the bodies of the characters. The thin shape and the large nose of the conductor fits the picture perfectly. I also absolutely adore the idea of this and would most definitely recommend this for a DD if I knew how.

I don't think I've commented on this yet, and if I have then that's cool because this deviation makes me that happy. It's so lovely, it's the happy glowy stars, Shanks and his hat and big grins. I wish all trains were that cool, unfortunately I feel like I am going to get shot just driving pass our train station.

My only complaint is that, in comparison with his left arm, his right arm seems just a little longer. That could only be because he's reaching more, but it just strikes me as "longer".

This has a very children's book illustration feel to it. I like it very much. Lovely piece.

They're the same length ahahaha I think it's because the hand and wrist is flat on one arm and bent in the other, but I measured them and they're pretty much the same.

and thanks :3

*embarrased cough* Herm herm herm ... Well, you're definately better than I, but I'm going to do my best to give you a helpful critique ... >_>;;;;;;;;;;;;;

Overall, of course, IT IS AWESOME. It makes me happy and dance-ish. ^_^ I think there is some stuff that could be better.

I read the comments above, and I think it would be better to show some o' those train wheels. ^_~ That, or make the clouds underneath ALL the train to mimic tracks. It's not something one NOTICES, 'till it's pointed out, but it's the stuff we *don't* consciously notice that makes a picture fantastical or not-so-much.

(I was going to say "NSFW", but I just figured out today that it stands for Not Safe For Work, instead of Not So For the Win. I'm not behind, I'm just busy. XD )

Clouds are awesome things of volumemous, amorpheous, water-vapory masses, that are constantly effected by stuff going on around them. I'm not really buying that these clouds are very cloudy things in the sky as a train zips through them. The clouds are shaded almost as if they're a solid mass - and clouds aren't. I'm not sure how exactly one can show that with paint, so I'm sorry there. : / I do think that a bit more time on the clouds, showing how they're effected by the zooming train, etc, will help the picture overall. ^_^

The last thing I'm gonna' be per-snark-ity about, is the star-shininess-ess. I think that they would be showing up a lot more against the shiney train, even the farther off ones - I could be wrong, but y'know. >_>;; And having them more glowy on the cloud bits, i think would help tie the atmosphere all together. :3

(Ah!!!!!! THAT'S what I'm trying to say!! The three elements, train, cloud, stars are all in the same picture, but they aren't really effecting or interacting with each other like they would IRL, cloud shapes changing from the train wind, stars shining off the train metal, and lightening the layers of cloud. There I said it. ^_^)

anyway ... um ... that's all I have to imput. ^_^

It is an awesome picture though, and I'm really jeleos. *sigh* Also, the stars remind me of Care Bear stars. o_O;; And they are cute.

^_^

Much appreciated!

So you read my "I DID THIS TO CUT CORNERS" bit on the train wheels? Ahahahahaha DX Yeah, one thing about these critique things is that I'm actually going to have to be honest about the things I do. I'm actually an incredibly lazy artist when it comes down to it. I just know how to make it look like I spent longer than I really did.

My only thing about the clouds is that they're actually NOT interacting with the train at all--they're supposed to be far in the background, just big. BUT, the actual problem is the fact that I've got size and distance mixed up with the shading in regards to the stars. There's a lot of, like what Hakumei said and which is probably my biggest problem, inconsistency within the picture. Sometimes the stars glow reaches really far, sometimes it doesn't. I think that's also where the train bit comes in, because it wasn't done with the thought "Oh, okay, first I do the train, and then I do the rest." I actually went with a quick underpainting first to establish lighting before even laying down colors. BUT I kept changing the scope of the stars' glow >.< I think actually a lot of the underglow on the clouds from the stars were only put there because I thought it would look prettier ahahaha

Anyhow, clouds in general are something I really need to work on. They're difficult, especially at night >.< I think when I did this piece I just totally disregarded realism in regards to them and went with storybook, cotton-clouds, you know what i'm saying? Must learn not to do that!

Anyhow, thank you again!

Heh heh, I cut corners TOO! I get really bored with a picture - particularly if it's "not working," and then I end up being, "EH! I'm DONE!" so yeah, I get it.

Okay, that makes more sense, I was thinking they were closer. ^_^

PadawanSushi [2009-09-28 13:38:38 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm I think the clouds could've been...they're a little bit flat. And I'm kind of wishing there was more of them occupying that big chunk of sky in the upper left hand corner. The stars came out very well I think and the subtle reflection of their color on the people is nice too. But hmm..maybe next time for the clouds look up some references maybe so you can load it with delicious detail?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GhiaMGM In reply to PadawanSushi [2009-09-28 17:32:31 +0000 UTC]

I actually totally agree with you now that I look at it about putting a cloud in the upper left corner. I think the only reason I didn't do that was that I was afraid that cloud color would interfere with star color (I wanted a dark sky to put them up against to make them more obvious), but looking at the rest of the piece I can see that there isn't too much of a problem with that.

and yeah, I was totally lazy with the clouds *laughs*. I actually went off to look for reference for clouds in a night sky, decided that none of the pictures fit the tone I wanted at all, and went off and did my own thing >.<

The piece itself has a lot going on, making the piece interesting. The colors used really set the mood for the piece, a fun yet calm type of mood. Prespective is very nicely done and give the illusion that the ride could stop now or continue on. Anatony errors are thrown out the window since its a cartoony style and cartoons pay no heed to it.xD All in all, a great piece and a fun one at that!

FFFT GAH I AM EMBARRASSED OF MINE NOW D:.

Okay okay um. CRITIQUE. Well, I really like the atmosphere. It definitely does reflect her work, even though it is in your own personal style.
I also adore the color palette you used, I really think it works here, nice and soft, with blues and yellows. If you wanted to push it a bit more, I guess you could throw in some purples, especially in darker areas, or even around the outer edges, to frame the composition. I also think purple might be a good contrast to the yellow, being a complimentary color and all.
I loooove your characters to bits, your pictures always have so much personality, it's wonderful!
Urrkkkk...can't really think of much else to say. D:

OKAY MY TURN *cracks knuckles*

You really capture atmosphere perfectly. Just the right about of space, so it doesn't look empty and it doesn't look cluttered.

Your perspective is great as always, and your character designs I LOVE because they are so unique. The train has lovely depth and all the people in the back adds more.

The back part of the sky looks a little bare bone though, some soft dark clouds could have shown how either far or high up they are but it looks fantastic. I would have loved to see a little scarlet or purple dabbed in the clouds, but you have a great sense of color~

And the stars are adorable. I want one~

IT'S AWESOME OKAY x3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GhiaMGM In reply to DCD-108 [2009-09-28 03:29:13 +0000 UTC]

Totally agreed about the barebones-ness of the back of the sky >.< It was something I was thinking about but I wasn't sure how to tackle it. Like "Oh...should I add more star-dots? But... augh, would that be too cluttery and...DDDX." And youré right about the color too-- I think with this I could've experimented a bit more with different sorts of shades and hues but I'm lame and only stuck dark purple and dark blue with the shadows because I'm generally scared of color *laughs*

ANd thank you!

HPhantasia [2009-09-28 03:16:32 +0000 UTC]

HMMMM, so its time for an actual critique, yes?
I always feel awkward giving them to people who are obviously much much better then I am ._.; So... take it with a grain of salt as always, yeah?

Let's see... The proportions on the people (mostly Shanks, lol) aren't the most "realistic" (to me at least) but that's just your style. ( I think you tend to go to about an 8 instead of a 7.5, which is probably where people get the idea that shanks is a bit more lanky but I like it )
Another thing, whether intentional or not, I feel that the shading is a bit... I guess inconsistent? (Like on the metal it seems more cel vs soft again, maybe just because you wanted it that way...)
I really, really like the perspective of the train. Its a believable train at that (good job! I know that's what you were hating the most. ^^)but... I got the feeling from the front of the train that the tracks were the clouds, but by the third person reaching out in the back the train isn't riding it anymore. Again, might have been intentional.
I love the clouds SO much, but I am a bit confused to where the light source is, because opposite sides of clouds are glowing.
Lastly, I noticed that some of the stars are more "pointy" some rounded, and some have circles in the middle some not. (If the circles is just because of front and back, disregard. ) I would just be a bit more consistent, at least going front to back.

I still love it though. It's really awesome. You just asked for a critique

Oh Gawd, you're gonna punch me in the face now, aren't you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GhiaMGM In reply to HPhantasia [2009-09-28 03:27:13 +0000 UTC]

YAY A CRITIQUE!!!

I was actually a bit scared that people wouldn't give me one. >.< I'm happy to see this, really.

And yeah, my people aren't completely realistically proportioned *laughs* I guess I could try for more realistic proportions on another piece?

As for the shading, it was done really quick, really, though, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this. (But inconsistent makes total sense, because I'm good at that *laughs*). There are bits where the shading is harder because I wanted the shadows to be harder, like the bits behind Shanks and all that, since it was more of a dropped shadow, if that makes sense?

Also...you're totally right about the clouds. Partially, I wanted to give the impression of the train cutting through the clouds. Or... no, I'll tell the truth. I CAN'T DRAW TRAIN WHEELS SO I TRIED TO HIDE THEM DX

The glowing bit at the bottom of the clouds were actually intended to be the light from the stars

As for the starfishes with their circles... I think the closer starfish all have circles (though some, with the way I colored it, are REALLy hard to see), while the ones further back didn't...because I'm lazy. You'll also notice that most of the ones further back are more pointy and more star and less fish because...I'm ...lazy. *laughs* So, that's true, and I should take more time to be more consistent with the pictures.

And thank you for the critique!

...and I won't punch you in the face unless you want one? D:

HPhantasia In reply to GhiaMGM [2009-09-28 04:51:10 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to do it more realistic! Hell, I've seen your realistic stuff (at least like gesture drawings and such, hahaha) and you can do it and do it well. I just think your cartoony style is... well stylized. So it's fine. :3

Yeah, that's what I meant. xD It makes sense.

LOL

I thought that that might also be the case too. I guess I didn't write that in

Yay for revelations!

1. it has a great perceptive when it comes the train going pass us, you could actually believe it's passing anyone and your on the train.

2. the detail of the background is amazing too, the way you blend gray and i think blue to make it night is wonderful.

3. My favorite is the stars. they really make the background alive and the way the conductor catchings a star with his hat is like a dream come true.

4. The whole drawing itself is amazing. it's like something out of a storybook.
It really looks like it came from a behind the scene look of an animated film in development.
