Awesome shot!

However I just can't help but be thrown of by the space at the bottom, if the branch was only a slightly bit lower I think the composition would be perfect

Thank you...

I didn't want to cut of the tail tip. I tried to balance things, but I was probably thinking more along the lines of reference/species characteristics as most important at the time... my bad!

Nice photo! Just a few pointers!

It's slightly unsharp, especially around the eye. Now assuming your metadata is correct I can see a potential reason. Your shutter speed was down at 1/100 despite the fact you were shooting at a focal length of 300mm. As a general rule of thumb your shutter speed should be faster than the value of your focal length. There is a calculation you can do to work out exactly what the minimum should be but right now I can't remember it. What mode were you working in? Av, Tv, or Manual? And are you focussing manually or using autofocus? And if autofocus, how many spots are you using?
Composition-wise, it's good. I would have made the eye more central, but in all honesty, I don't think that would have added to the image in this case!

In any case, great work! Keep it up!

I know I had my camera set on continuous capture and autofocus with central cluster spot focus... I think this was from one of the days where I was experimenting and pushing the limits of my white balance settings. (I'd have to go back and check the dates on the batch of originals this particular photo was from.) I like to do that on rainy days.

Thanks for the tips. I'll defnitely keep them in mind for future work... especially now that I'm getting better with my limited photo editing software. Working off a laptop means I don't have the specs needed for anything too terribly advanced, like Photoshop.

You don't really need Photoshop for photo editing. It's got many more features than you'll actually use. I use Lightroom 3 and that's perfect, especially with the whole host of free presets you can discover on the web! But it's down to personal preference in the end!
