Description I'm with them
But I feel a distance
The love is there
And so is care
They're my family
And I owe them a lot
But I feel misunderstood
Like they barely even know me
So I tolerate all this
As I long for freedom

I think about this sometimes. The love is there but also, the feeling of a wall blocking understanding.

That's pretty much the way it feels.

Sometimes families can be difficult. Β I can relate to this.

What artist is understood? Look at Escher, Dali, all of the great ones
were enigmas.

I think it goes far beyond the art...

Β
That sounds as if your family is foreign to your own nature - and you to theirs. You can love each other, no problem. But all of you will never reach that level of understanding that people have that "belong". You can do nothing more than tolerate and embrace the difference. There may always remain a distance besides the family closeness.

That's very true. We tolerate each other and live together for now. I can't really complain about most of it
And thanks

It's interesting that you feel this. My oldest son (who's almost 28) seems to feel the same - he has always been much more distant and detached in our family than my younger son (just 18). I put it down to him not bonding properly with me in the early days as I was very ill as soon as he was born and in fact he ended up having to be looked after/brought up by my older sister for quite a long while.

Perhaps you didn't bond with your mother/family in the early days or maybe they were just too busy and you felt they didn't give you enough time/love? ... Psychologists are now discovering that this early 'bonding'Β is a very important aspect. I'm sorry you feel like this as I'm sure your family love you very much.

I'd say he became a bit distant. Early years can be really tough on some people. And you're right. My father was really busy with his work, my mother had to take care of my grandfather, who was ill...And I had to help if I could and get out of the way when I couldn't. I guess that created a barrier between me ansd my relatives.

Strangely enough I can relate to that.Β  My mum has always made it clear that she "didn't want me" (not that I was an unplanned pregnancy but those words specifically!) MyΒ parents already had two teenagers when I came along. MyΒ dad was ill when I was born too and my mum was very conscious of having a baby in the house that would disturb/upset him so I was very much to be "seen but not heard". Then, when I was still very young, she started working and I was expected to fit in (and later help) with that, with no questions asked. I think this has contributed to me feeling like I've never really fitted in too and I always feel in everything that I am somehow a bit of an 'outsider'. Once again, I think all this develops a creative/poetic and deep-thinking mind - so I'm sure there's plenty of others who fit with this as well. Β

That's a bit tragic. I guess family life can be complicated in these situations. And it seems like we have more in common than I expected.till, I think a rough past makes people stronger.
