So sweet. She looks so cuddly. I can't believe it's all hand sewn, it must have taken forever!

She looks adorable! Great job! The sewing is wonderful, especially due to the fact that it wasn't a machine! Are the eyes painted?

I have to say, that is one unique pillow!
I’ll also say that I hate sewing machines as much as I hate computers, so it’s kind of a so-so situation for me.

well, I love computers! But is kind of a addiction (there are times I'm really tired of it but keep using it).

Heh, I hear ya. It’s like a love-hate thing for me. It’s great when it’s working properly.

I knoow... me too! I have a complicated relation with computers ; )
haha but with sewing machines I think is simple mutual hatred. oh my ^^

Well that is a bummer. If you don’t mind me asking though (maybe I can learn sometihng), what issues do you have with sewing machines? I mean, I still consider myself a beginner, but I’ve used one from the start (but it's also 30 years old). Is it alignment issues, because I am still working on a way to mitigate those.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

gianjos In reply to adamlhumphreys [2012-08-23 21:10:49 +0000 UTC]

The one I have is a bit old too. its my mom's machine, she doesn't use it very much either, but she uses it more than me, for sure.
Maybe with a new one will be more friendly to me, I dont know.
I guess I have alignment issues too, I think what I most hate is I don't have the same control as sewing by hand. And that stubborn machine keeps loosening the thread, that when doesn't entangle everything.. I've lost count of how many times I thought I sewed some bit and then notice that the needle had released the line.
So, to not lose my mind, I prefer sewing by hand hahah : )

adamlhumphreys In reply to gianjos [2012-08-24 04:33:20 +0000 UTC]

My mom used to use it more than me, but I’ve been using it more than she has in a long time.
I know what you mean about control, but recently, it’s almost like I feel I shouldn’t fight the fabric. That is, if something isn’t exactly aligned, I can compensate for it on the other side. But I haven’t had too many problems the thread loosening. I think that only happened one time. There were a few times it threw the thread from the pull-up arm and tangled everything up, but now I just use tape and run the thread through it.

But I also run it through a Variac autotransformer, so I have it running at about 80 volts or so rather than the full 120 volts from the wall so that slows it down. The original foot switch wasn’t very predictable, so it’s either on or off at 80 volts through a simple power footswitch.

Maybe a few tweaks here and there could get it to work better, but if you’re having that much trouble, then I can understand for sure. Do you generally use backstitches for straight stitches?

gianjos In reply to adamlhumphreys [2012-08-25 23:58:00 +0000 UTC]

Maybe the volts have something about it, I've never thought about that, but it makes sense. And here the default (from the wall) is 220 volts (too much!).
I'm not really a needlewoman ^^ (I don't know too much about names of stitches) but I will find out and try it Thank you

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

adamlhumphreys In reply to gianjos [2012-08-26 03:10:31 +0000 UTC]

Ah, 220 volts. Then I guess things might work better at 150, but I know they make 220 volt auto transformers too.

No prob. I didn’t even sew until about 2.5 months ago. The plushies were just getting to me, and I wanted to know what it took to make one (while also looking for a job).

I'm thinking in buying one of those hand sewing machines. They are cheap, if doesn't work I wouldn't care that much. Do you know them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

adamlhumphreys In reply to gianjos [2012-08-24 04:39:03 +0000 UTC]

Gasp! I’ve never heard of such a thing. I totally had to look that up, but they look very interesting, and handy (no pun intended )!
If you get one, please tell me how you like it, I might want to try one myself if it gives me more control!
