Description

As the century progresses, there is a slight slimming to the male silhouette.  Small on top and wide on the bottom, a triangular silhouette is the norm.  The coat is fitted snugly in the torso, but the skirt of the coat is still flared and full, and boot cuffs are still popular. Coats like this were stiffly reinforced in the side pleats to create the flare, echoing the width of the female hoop skirt of the period.  The waistcoat has shortened to mid-thigh length.  Wigs become smaller and more contained.  This gentleman is wearing a bag wig, popular by this time, typically with one or more rolls at the side and the tail caught up in a small bag at the back.
