Description The Historical Restoration Agency is growing! I decided that I needed to create some team-mates for Miranda ([link] )... since while Miranda does go on a number of solo missions, I thought it'd be interesting for her to have a team to rely on for the tougher ones.

So yeah, Averie (despite the pun, this is apparently an actual name). I've wanted to try a bird-type character for a while, but the beak was always a worry... how do you make it expressive? Would it look right? Then I watched Rio recently and realised with a character like this you can focus more on the eyes for expression and it would still kinda work. Reading Darkwing Duck also helped.

The team won't be very big though. I'm planning on designing one or two more characters to join in.

You can also refer to Legend of the Guardians and that other movie about the pigeons... (can't remember the name) for 'beak expression'

I think you're getting stuck with doing static portrait images, try doing more dynamic scenes with these characters and develop them even more by doing that.

Heehee, teeny owl-beaks. It's a thought though, thanks. Would the other one be Valiant?

I agree that some of these pics feel a bit too static but I can't think of how to alternate it other than via comic pages (and a lot of these are just quick character practise like this particular one was to test out the design). Do you mean like setting them in actual scenes with backgrounds an' whatnot?

Yup Valiant's the one

That's kinda what i mean... I think you can do rough sketches to test character designs, but putting the design to test through a scene would be much more beneficial. Take a look at the Cotton Star (by Behemoth) character sheets. Still a little static, but the fish-eye perspective, gives the design depth (and most importantly: the characters still look amazing).

Hope this makes sense :/

Think so... reckon I've gotta resist thinking "ooh let's quickly draw a profile shot of this character" and end up spending a week or more colouring it in and so on.

Also quite importantly, need to spend more time doing comic pages (or single scenes)... got all these characters now and I keep doing static single frame pics because they're easier. Since I can't do rough sketches (all mouse-drawn), need to be careful with how the time's spent.

Just gimme a poke with a stick if you notice I'm still doing boring pics a little way down the line. Thanks for the advice

No problem man. Be confident in your ability to create and everything else will follow.

This is great I actually designed a character by that name as well, but never took it anywhere. Well done

Was your character also female? (just interested as the name can apparently go both ways) Thanks man!

Hmm well this is a first I must day, haven't seen a bird type anthro before, well besides Falco from Starfox Loving the way that you did her eyes here man! Just one thing, birds don't have ears

Or bellybuttons... or arms, feet, hair etc. Hehe nah I know what you mean, initially I designed her without ears but then decided no I'd rather have a bit of a hybrid with small, elf-like ears

Thanks dewd 8]

Very nice painting bud

And comrade Captain Unobservant is correct, her navel should twist with the rest of her body

Thank yah sir, if the hips are facing towards the viewer though, would it not be correctly positioned as it stands?

I do believe so... yes, and looking at the picture again, I see that her hips do seem to be facing the viewer, it is an odd look though, but you are correct

Nice stuff Gibbo! I can offer one crit for you, which'll probably make you hate me... Her belly button is at a very strange angle in relation to her actual pose. It should be twisting to the left with the rest of her body, unless her hips are rotating towards the right. The problem is in the way that the hips have been cropped, because you can't really tell if that's actually what's happening...

But like I said, it's looking really awesome and I love the colours!

HATE YOU FOREVAR

Hehe, nah you're right it didn't quite look right (her hips are twisting but it's hard to tell) so I've flatted the bellybutton out a bit. Hopefully looks a bit better now

I likey!!! The short tail bugs me a little, I would imagine it to be longer more flowey tail, but I know you're trying to get that robin type look. Also, her right cheek seems to come in a bit too steeply in angle.

I really like the character design though. I still want to draw Miranda one day.

Yeah I did debate having a long flowey tail, decided on shorter in the end, though I think it's actually a bit longer than it looks... will probably help doing a proper character sheet where I can experiment a bit. In fact I will do just that!

I would be a very happy chappy if you were to draw Miranda

I actually know an Avery myself... sweet kid!

Very cool character design overall, birds are a bit rare, probably on account of the expressions you speak of!

Guy or girl? As far as I understand Avery is generally the male version and Averie the female equivalent, or something along those lines.

Rare but really quite rewarding, I recommend you try it out!

Girl, so perhaps I've misspelt it

I most certainly will consider it!
